Check out Pharrell's first fragrance.
Photo: Getty Images/WWD/Ben Wright

We've known since last fall that Pharrell would be releasing a fragrance. In March it was announced that he would be collaborating with Comme Des Garcons on the scent and that it would be called "G I R L," just like his most recent album. We also found out that despite its name, the scent would be unisex. That preliminary info held us over for a few weeks, but we wanted more. We always want MOAR. Good news: Today Pharrell revealed the forthcoming bottle and what the fragrance would actually smell like to WWD.

The scent, packaged more like a sculpture than your average perfume bottle, is definitely something you’ll want to put on display. It features a colorful cartoon by Kaws, a friend of Pharrell's and the artist who designed the 2013 VMA Moonman, NBD. The 100-ml. bottle is priced at $135 and a 10-ml. travel size version costs $30.

While reading about a scent doesn't exactly reveal, y'know, what it smells like, it can help sculpt what to expect. For this unisex fragrance, you'll be sniffing on “top notes of neroli, lavender and white pepper; middle ones of iris, styrax and violet, and base ones of vetiver, patchouli, cedarwood and sandalwood,” according to WWD. Those things might sound a little out there on paper a screen but–hey–we trust Pharrell.

She may be rehearsing for her Super Bowl halftime performance right now, but make no mistake, Beyonce's fashion empire doesn't sleep while her music career is in the foreground. While you were re-watching Malia Obama photobomb her parents for the billionth time, the King Bey camp decided it was ready to make her new Pulse NYC fragrance known. Over the weekend, they released unto the world this behind-the-scenes video from the ad campaign, and it is just as windswept and glittering and rife with "Love On Top" horns as anyone could hope.

Will Oldham and his Bonnie Billy perfume.

Ok, so there are two possible reactions you might be having right now, after reading the name Bonnie "Prince" Billy. One is that you're like, "who dat?" and scratching your head and maybe moving on to another post (don't move on! This is going to be funny, swear!), or, you're thinking about the last time you got sad, put "I See A Darkness" on your iPod, and cried into your pillow. The stage name of legendary punk folk songwriter Will Oldham, the music of Bonnie "Prince" Billy is emotional and singular, and those who love him, LOVE him a lot. But we're not here to tell you what to put on your sad days playlist (although you totally should work him into your rotation). No, we're here because we got our grubby little perfume loving paws on a vial of his Bonnie Billy fragrance, and OBVIOUSLY subjected our office to the MTV Style smell test. As we all learned when they gave their olfactory critiques of Rihanna's Nude, our loyal coworkers are getting pretty good at the smell test game, but they were not prepared for the curve ball we threw them with Bonnie Billy. When we first got the sample, perfumer Sanae Barber of Sanae Intoxicants, the lab behind the smell, warned us of its intensity, saying "It's slightly reminiscent of gasoline when you first take a whiff. It's intense!" she went on to explain, "I'm using 80% pure perfume oils, attars, resins and absolutes. After applying, wait about 20 to 30 min. It warms, softens and a prism of scents are released, most people especially notice the jasmine, tobacco and oud." With this in mind, I volunteered myself as guinea pig, and put the fragrance on both of my wrists. Gaby Wilson also got some on her hands, and we went slowly around the office, gauging people's reactions as the scent changed.

I've spent more hours than I would like to admit listening to Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie "Prince" Billy, rocking back and forth and sobbing imagining what the woodsy singer smells like. Ok so maybe not, maybe I was doing that other thing (but we're not gonna talk about it, ok?) but when I saw that luxury fragrance maker Sanae Intoxicants is releasing a scent with Oldham, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Oldham is a legend, not just for his work as Bonnie "Prince" Billy but also as Palace, Palace Music, and Palace Brothers. In his various incarnations he has created some of the most breathtaking and heartbreaking music, while bending genres and always keeping listeners guessing. With a punk rock approach to classic American folk music, Oldham is a new breed. As such, it's hard to imagine just what such a man would want to smell like. I asked a friend what she thought, and, being totally on my wavelength, she said "beards and tears," but I think it's so much more than that. According to the description of the scent, this isn't some Bon Iver-y woodsmoke, fresh snow, and beard oil, chopping firewood and being romantic fragrance. No, with tobacco, jasmine, and an ingredient we're unsure about called assam oud (which appears to be an oil extracted from agar wood), the scent, we think, without having yet smelled it, resembles the olfactory profile of a summer night spent outside, surrounded by lush plants, in a quiet moment during a raucous adventure. Like Oldham's music, there's nothing cruncy-sounding about the scent, and it's far more sophisticated than simple. Just the combination of tobacco and jasmine is enough to have us totally intrigued, as is the fact that the scent is suitable for both men and women. More info on how you can cop a bottle of Bonnie Billy for yourself after the jump.

What does Rihanna's Nude perfume smell like?
Photo: Courtesy of Macy's/Rihanna Nude

We can't say seeing the words "Rihanna" and "nude" in such close proximity is all that unique or shocking. Between her latest GQ cover, her Unapologetic album art and her many topless Instagram pics, it's almost more unusual to see the girl in clothes nowadays, making the fact that her latest perfume release is named "Nude" even more fitting. The newest addition to Rihanna's suite of fragrances is now available in Macy's stores nationwide, but we got our hands on it via Maud Deitch's 777 tour swag bag. Dying to know what the new Rihanna scent smells like? We took a sample of it around the office for another one of our patented blind smell tests to get you an unbiased answer!

Justin Bieber

While the status of Justin Bieber's IRL girlfriend may be up in the air, J.Bieb's Girlfriend perfume is rock steady and gets a press reboot just in time for the holiday season *WINK* with its very first commercial! Where Girlfriend is the "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" next-step from Bieber's Someday debut scent, the ad spot for the new fragrance is similarly more mature. It's not mature in, like, a Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for Burberry Body way. We just mean that Bieber and the new fragrance take one appropriate, teenage-sized step away from Someday and its whispered promises and luxury ice cream sundaes.

On top of a new album, single, and beauty-stacked music video, Christina Aguilera is ALSO launching a brand new perfume. The new scent, Red Sin, is the latest addition to Xtina's major fragrance arsenal, and probably the spiciest one yet with notes of ginger, cinnamon, sandalwood, cyclamen, musk and red apple. We took you through her sultry commercial for the fragrance earlier this month, but thanks to our friends at Fashion Indie who sat down to chat with THE Miss Aguilera, we now get a snapshot into the thought process behind developing the scent and the ad spot. Check out the 5 things we learned from their interview with Xtina after the jump!

One Direction

One Direction might have a perfume in the works.
Photo: Getty Images

Heads up, Directioners! According to our friends at Marie Claire UK, there might be a One Direction PERFUME coming down the pipe just for you! The mag revealed that everyone's favorite Brit-Irish boy band "are to put their names to a new scent for women that will feature floral notes and be suitably sweet for their predominantly teenage fanbase." And then we gripped our desks and screamed at our computer monitors a full 60 seconds. MC UK elaborated, "A source close to the band told us: 'One Direction are working on releasing a scent, it’s all super secret right now.'" *pause for snickering about the unintentional hilarity of "releasing a scent"* Before we start clearing out some counter space for a 1D perfume bottle (or *cue genius light bulb* perhaps FIVE?), we'll hold for a beat until the dudes themselves confirm the news, but it totally wouldn't surprise us if the group had a scent in the works.

Rihanna's new campaign for her Nude fragrance.
Photo: @badgirlriri's Instagram

Ok so she's not all the way down to her birthday suit, but Rihanna is nearly naked in a photo for her fragrance, Nude, that she leaked on Instagram over the weekend. She posted the photo, alongside the caption "Here is my new add [sic] for a brand new fragrance #NUDE !!! Make sure you smell sexy, especially naked, this fall!!!" on Friday evening, starting off the holiday weekend with a big piece of news. The campaign also shows Ri with as an old Hollywood-style blonde, a hair look that's completely unlike the super fashionable pixie cut she's been sporting since the 2012 VMA's. She shot the steamy pics back in May, when she announced, also via Instagram, that she would be putting out the new fragrance, and we've been tapping our toes wondering about them ever since. With Nude set to be released this fall, however, they're right on schedule for a super hot holiday release.

Nicki Minaj posing in her lollipop bra.
Photo: Getty

It's here! That's right, you can finally get your grubby little hands on Nicki Minaj's debut fragrance, Pink Friday! To celebrate the occasion, Nicki wore a bright and sweet lollipop bra to her perfume launch event at Macy's Herald Square in New York City, making us wonder if the fragrance itself smells like candy as much as Nicki's bra looks like it (you'll find out soon, we promise). The bustier features rainbow cups, a dainty little ruffle and hard candies in the place of the traditional bow, and she paired it with a bright pink blazer, blue and white striped leggings and a pink policeman's cap. Nicki posed next to her totally insane perfume bottle, which is a miniature bust of the singer, complete with pink wig and tiny little nameplate (so. killer.). Nicki sat down with MTV News at her perfume launch to discuss Pink Friday. She goes into everything from how long she's been thinking about launching her fragrance, to the process that went into the design of the bottle. Watch the video after the jump!
