Shoes have a way of making or breaking an outfit, and this year, we saw a number of style stars turning to fabulous footwear to finish their red carpet looks. From studded, embellished heels (favored by America's Next Top Model winner Eva Marcille) and colorful platforms (worn by Ciara) to pretty, feminine Mary Janes (we're looking at you, Emma Roberts!), 2010 was certainly a memorable year for shoes. Let's take a look at some of our favorite trends.

CRAZY HEELS: Blake Lively and Ciara added major drama to their dresses by pairing them with crazy, funky heels. Blake went for lucite Lanvin wedges, while Ciara chose black-and-white studded heels.

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN STUDDED BOW PEEP-TOES: These Christian Louboutin studded bow peep-toes were by far the most POPULAR shoes of the year! They were seen on fashionistas of all ages, including stars such as Heidi Klum, Ashley Tinsdale, Dakota Fanning, and Dania Ramirez.

Heidi Klum at A Pea in the Pod's Mom's-to-Be Night Out in Beverly Hills on May 26, Ashley Tisdale at the CW Summer TCA Party in Beverly Hills on July 28, Dakota Fanning at "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" Premiere in Los Angeles on June 24, Dania Ramirez at the "Conviction" Premiere in Beverly Hills on October 5.

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN MESH LACE BOOTIES: Lace dresses have been a popular trend on the red carpet recently, but we also like the style on shoes! Jessica Alba and Stephanie Pratt both wore these Christian Louboutin mesh lace booties to events this year, adding a nice touch of texture to their outfits.

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN LEOPARD BOOTIES: We LOVE leopard here at MTV Style. And seeing these hot leopard print Christian Louboutin booties, which were seen on everyone from Kim Kardashian to Olivia Palermo to Ciara, helped feed our obsession.

MIU MIU MARY JANES: Camilla Belle and Emma Roberts both chose a classic style—the Mary Jane—for red carpet events in 2010. These pretty Miu Miu shoes, which are adorned with a cute bow, added major romance to their outfits.

RUTHIE DAVIS SPIKED HEELS: There seemed to be a bit of a Goth revival in fashion this year, with stars like Lucy Hale sporting sexy, black spiked heels with their girly dresses. We love the edgier shoe with more feminine shifts—it's such a fun way to mix and match trends.

VERSACE PLATFORMS: Platforms can have a tendency to look dated. But Ciara's patterned Versace shoes looked nothing short of fabulous at a BET event on June 26. We love how the colorful shoes totally added flair to her basic tee and jeans ensemble.

GASOLINE GLAMOUR STUDDED EMBELLISHED PUMPS: When you opt for a classic dress, there's no better way to glam it up than with festive footwear. We ADORED these shiny, studded pumps by Gasoline Glamour, which Eva Marcille wore with a beige frock at the BET awards in June.

LACE-UP COLOR BLOCK HEELS: Leighton Meester rocked a vibrant blue frock to Fashion's Night Out in September, and she made it a head-to-toe color affair by choosing these booties by Christian Louboutin. So fierce!

YVES SAINT LAURENT BLUE PUMPS: Blue was a popular hue this year and no heels were as popular as the Yves Saint Laurent Palais pumps, which were seen on stars like Carey Mulligan and Ke$ha (who added goat fur trim to hers for video flair).

Anne Hathaway in Jimmy Choo on Dec. 6, Elle Fanning in Valentino on Dec. 7, Emma Roberts in Miu Miu on Dec. 3.
Photo: Getty Images/WireImage

Celebrities dazzled on the red carpet this week, stepping out in stunning, sparkly footwear. Beautiful gowns took a backseat to the shiny shoes, like Anne Hathaway's silver shimmery Jimmy Choo platform sandals (that matched her equally glittery dress, natch). And how adorable are Elle Fanning's rhinestone encrusted bows on her Valentino kitten heels?! We also flipped for Emma Roberts' hot pink glitter Miu Miu heels, which added a bright pop of color next to her black sequined Miu Miu frock. All three ladies sparked our interest, but which embellished look was your favorite?

Blake Lively on Sept. 11, Sept. 9, July 28.
Photo: WireImage/Getty Images

Blake LivelyVogue cover girl (three times!), inspiration to Christian Louboutin, and all-around trendsetter—has just been named the new face of Chanel! This isn't too surprising, given the fact that she wears the label to red carpet events ALL THE TIME, and even sat front row with Vogue editor Anna Wintour at the French fashion house's runway show last summer. Blake was reportedly just in Paris shooting a handbag campaign for Chanel, and the campaign is slated to run early next year. In the meantime, check out our three favorite Chanel looks on Blake Lively.

Blake Lively at "The Town" Premiere in Toronto on Sept. 11.

Blake opted for a sparkly Chanel shift when she attended the premiere of her film The Town at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 11. The actress made it a head to-toe red affair by wearing red lipstick and sexy red pumps. We love how the floral details on the outfit's collar and skirt add fun volume to the look.

In September, Blake picked a purple, sleeveless shift from the label's Fall 2010 Couture collection for the reopening of Chanel's boutique in New York's SoHo neighborhood. The Gossip Girl paired the striped and sequined dress with bold Louboutin heels, and styled her hair in a loose ponytail. Talk about effortless elegance!

This is our favorite Chanel look on Blake! For the New York premiere of Twelve, Blake wore a navy tweed frock with a sheer panel from the label's Resort 2011 collection. The Gossip Girl star dressed up the look with beige Christian Louboutin Bianca slingbacks and kept her beauty simple with a wavy ponytail.

Fergie in Ruthie Davis on Nov. 21, Jennifer Lopez in Gucci on Nov. 20, Jessica Alba in Christian Louboutin on Nov. 30.
Photo: Getty Images/WireImage

Celebrities shelved their sweet, feminine footwear this week for spiked and studded shoes. Check out these killer (really, they could take an eye out) kicks from Fergie, who was spotted in Ruthie Davis platforms that were business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back with metal spikes poking out from the heel. Jennifer Lopez wore Gucci warrior-like sandals with round studs on the straps. Jessica Alba, meanwhile, went spike-happy in black Christian Louboutin pumps with all-over pointy black studs. We love these superhot heels, but which one is your fave?

• The love affair between Blake Lively and Christian Louboutin continued at last night's Footwear News Achievement Awards, where the designer was named Person of the Year. Blake joked that she should be "institutionalized" for how many Louboutin shoes she owns, while the designer added that he creates shoes with the Gossip Girl in mind. Now, that's love! {Fashionista}

• Just what does it take to be a model for online shopping sites? Good looks—but not intimidatingly so—and a "relatable" aura. {NYT}

• It's a good day for designers, and maybe a not-so-good day for those of us who love designer knockoffs. The Senate passed a bill that offers copyright protection for "unique and original designs." {Daily Front Row}

Mila Kunis, Natalie Portman, and Thora Birch at the 'Black Swan' premiere in New York on Nov. 30.
Photo: Getty Images

Dozens of screen stars (decked out in GORGEOUS dresses) flocked to Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City last night for the premiere of the ballet-based flick, Black Swan, which hits theaters nationwide on Dec. 3. The fashion mood was part dark/part elegant. Hmm, sounds a lot like the mood of the movie (which we can’t wait to see, by the way!). Here are our favorite looks of the evening.

Mila Kunis, who costars in Black Swan, glowed in a off-white Elie Saab short-sleeve deep V-neck gown, which she wore with gold accessories—drop earrings, a bracelet trio and AMAZING Christian Louboutin pumps.

Black Swan star Natalie Portman walked the carpet in an off-the-shoulder black Dior gown. She teamed the stunning dress with blood red lips and an Olympia Le-Tan book clutch of the novel Lolita. Our only complaint about Natalie’s look? Her somber smirk…smile, girl!

Thora Birch at the 'Black Swan' premiere in New York on Nov. 30.

Thora Birch (remember her from the movie American Beauty?) wore a simple silk blouse, black skirt and deep red pumps that looked more glam when teamed with her clipped back hair and wine-colored pout.

In Gossip Girl's 10th episode of season four, "Gaslit," there were no parties, thus no floor-length sparkly dresses with mini-trains or over-the-top suits for us to go gaga over (sniff sniff). Instead, the episode took a more somber turn, centering around Serena's (Blake Lively) "apparent"—she was actually drugged by girl-with-some-kind-of-chip-on-her-shoulder Juliet Sharp (Kate Cassidy)—overdose pre-Thanksgiving and her admittance into a rehab facility. While there weren't really any red carpet worthy looks last night, a couple of super-wearable, chic looks did pop up. Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen), who tried to right her wrongs against Serena in this episode, teamed her signature dark lipstick with layers of gray—a mini sweater dress, a plaid coat and over-the-knee boots. Meanwhile Juliet Sharp, who seemed to grow even more conniving throughout the episode, left the Upper East Side in a long sleeve, cutout navy minidress with black stockings and Christian Louboutin pumps. Both ladies did casual-chic the right way, but we love Juliet's "I'll-just-skip-town-looking-hot" ensemble. Which mean girl do you think was best dressed?

The 2010 American Music Awards were held last night in Los Angeles, and while we expected to see some rather out-there performance outfits (which we did!), we were pleasantly surprised to see stars taking some serious fashion risks pre-show, too. These are the red carpet looks that REALLY caught our eyes.

Nicki Minaj at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Nov. 21.

Even though Nicki Minaj's Manish Arora dress conservatively covered her knees, it was still the most "revealing" outfit of the night. With what looked like a golden skeleton embellishment on the outside (how much more revealing can you get!), it was amazing that our fave Barbie could even sit down. She paired the work of art with pink Christian Louboutin sandals and green-tipped hair.

Ke$ha at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Nov. 21.

For her AMAs red carpet ensemble, Ke$ha seemed to be inspired by her 2010 VMAs dress. Remember the fitted minidress made out of garbage bags that she wore then? Yeah, well this time she wore a floor-length shredded (garbage bag?) gown with a deep V-neck and a high-slit. Her makeup — studded eyebrows and mercury-colored lipstick — was just as eye-catching.

Willow Smith (aka the cool girl we wish we were when we were 10-years-old), presented at the AMAs wearing a slate gray romper with a funky yellow buckled, puff-sleeved jacket, leather gloves, and the slouchiest booties we've ever seen. This girl is literally oozing with style.

Lil Wayne at the Miami Heat vs. Phoenix Suns game in Miami on Nov. 17.
Photo: Getty Images

Rapper Lil Wayne, freshly released from jail after serving time for gun possession, stopped by the the Miami Heat vs. Phoenix Suns game in Miami yesterday to relax courtside. And while usually we see this guy in white tanks and jeans, he changed it up yesterday and wore something totally unexpected — a gray crew-neck sweatshirt with Neiman Marcus' logo scrawled on it in pink. A Neiman Marcus sweatshirt? On Lil Wayne?! We never even saw one of those before!

That's because it's vintage. A Neiman Marcus representative confirmed to MTV Style today that it's been more than 10 years since the luxury store has carried the sweatshirt, which was originally used as a promotional piece during the holidays for store employees to wear. As for the rapper wearing it, perhaps he found it at a thrift shop, because the store did not give it to him. Overall, Lil Wayne pulls off the total look well, pairing the top with camouflage cargo shorts, a fitted navy hat, and Christian Louboutin spike sneakers, which retail for $1,095 online. Who knew this guy was a closet Neiman Marcus fan? Not us, that's for sure.

+ Do you like Lil Wayne's Neiman Marcus look?
