Ah, the old cap and gown. If you're anything like we were back in those days, you spent all of high school, and who are we kidding, all of college too, counting down the days until you could put on that polyester robe and goofy mortarboard and strut your stuff straight to a diploma (and with it, freedom). Graduation is a huge deal, one of the most important things you'll ever achieve, and as such, it's an occasion that warrants a fly outfit. There are also SO. MANY. PHOTOS. taken on graduation day, that you want to make sure you won't have to hide your head in shame over something you wore. Here's the thing, though: you can't really see much underneath your gown, so aside from the lunch or dinner you have with your parents after it's all over, your dress doesn't actually make much of an impact. Your shoes, on the other hand, are everything. Whether you're into sneakers, heels, or flats, we found 15 pairs of kicks that will add just the right amount of pop to that gown.

Who doesn't love a classic wedge for a classic day.

There's a solid chance that your graduation, or at least some part of it, is taking place outside. The last thing you want are your shoes making you anxious by sinking into the grass on the football field, or, oof, tripping you up on your way to your diploma. Wedges are a solid, safe bet if a classic look and some height is what you're after. If you just want a tiny little boost, the ankle strap mini wedge from Madewell ($94.50) comes in a grip of super springy colors. If more height is what you're after, Marais USA's Firefly Wedge in Clambake ($160.00) is a super summery answer (that will perfectly match the classic Essie color of the same name). If you want something a little tougher, Dolce Vita's Mosey Platform Booties ($179.00) still give you the height, but add a little edge. If classic summer is more your look, J.Crew's Sardinia wedge espadrilles ($118.00) have that french seaside je ne sais quoi written all over them. Finally, if simple and bright is exactly what the doctor ordered, look no further than Seychelles Thyme Wedge Sandal ($95.00).

Miley Cyrus Dr. Martens

Miley Cyrus wears her Dr. Martens on Aug. 25, Aug. 15, and Aug. 23.
Photo: Splash News/@MileyCyrus' Twitter

It's official—Miley Cyrus has gone grunge! Ever since the pop singer transformed her long locks into a bleach-blonde pixie cut, she has been totally revamping her entire wardrobe. Lately she's ditched her boho-chic ways for an edgier '90s look, and we LIKE it. Over the past couple weeks, we've spotted Miley sporting her head-to-toe grunge-inspired duds, and we couldn't help but notice that she kept re-wearing the SAME pair of shoes—lace-up Dr. Martens boots! She opted for the 10-eyelet patent leather pair with an extra chunky sole from the DM x Agyness Deyn collection ($160). (Come to think of it, she is TOTALLY channeling Aggy these days! We see what you did there, Miley.) The cool part about these kicks is that they are an updated version of the '90s staple and can be paired with literally anything. Over the weekend, Miley went casual-cool in a heather gray Brian Lichtenberg tee, dark skinny jeans, and, of course, her signature Docs. For accessories, she sported oversized gold hoop earrings, layered gold necklaces, stacked bracelets, and minimal makeup. We like how she left her boots untied to add a touch of edginess to her ensemble.

Icona Pop

In case you were wondering, I remain seriously obsessed with many a Swedish sartorially slaying bubbly songstress cutie. See: arm-flailing-friendly dance-floor diva Robyn and her penchant for zanily patterned Jeremy Scott and platform Timbs and/or reigning fashion-y It Girl Lykke Li and her gothic-y ice princess lewks, most recently causing maje droolage whilst performing at a painfully chic Manhattan dinner for ACNE. *Nods head enthusiastically* But there's a new stylish Swede-y in town, and she comes in TWOS. *DEAD* Meet Aino and Caroline, the bananas-ly baffling UH.DUH.RAH.BLE musical BFF duo behind the dizzyingly addictive electro-pop outfit, Icona Pop. They basically make the kind of music that makes one itch for endless make-out seshs with foxy German boys at warehouse sea-punk raves that pump blaring techno from Friday evening into Monday morning. *Crickets* (ED NOTE: Alex's currently in Berlin.) If you haven't lost your mind to their much blogged-about pop anthem "Manners," in which I shout along "There is no one like me!", yet, WHACHA WAITING FOR? Then there's their latest perma-smize-inducing jam ("you're from the 70s, but I'm a '90s bitch!" lyrical genius + heavy wind-machine usage in the music vid = *faints*), "I Love It", from their forthcoming debut LP, and duh, you're gonna heart it hardcore. Better yet, Icona Pop's style game is on another indescribable level of UHMAZE (Dr. Martens, creamsicle lips, their lucky matching rock crystal necklaces, OH MY!) FYI: That'll be me schvitzing on my own in a tye-die tank at their June 22nd show at Glasslands. Until then, HAPPY FAVE THANGS FRIDAY. Go on, y'all. Let the obsession begin.

Kat Graham

A still from Kat Graham's "Put Your Graffiti On Me" music video.
All Photos: Courtesy of A&M/Octane Records

Not to be alarmist and shrill but: UUUUUM WILL EVERYBODY DROP EVERYTHING AND LOOK AT THIS VIDEO PLEASE BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS IT NOOOOOW. It’s the vid for Kat Graham’s “Put Your Graffiti On Me” directed by Benny Boom and obviously I am slightly obsessed with it given that a) the song is a syncopated masterpiece of girl-power anthem-ish goodness and b) Kat’s stylist Brett Alan Nelson is a fuhreaking genius and I can’t even deal with all the streetwear Easter Eggs dotted throughout. AND WELL, HI, I did work at a graffiti magazine for years one million years ago. Anyway, on a scale of one to WILDLY REWARDING, for me it is absolutely the latter.

I grabbed Brett for a chinwag over the phone and we ki-ki’d like banshees and high-fived about the styling at least twelve times because, really, it’s incredibly empowering and SO ’90s in way that is surprisingly fresh and if you’re a huge sportswear and music + fashion dork like I am you’ll just get a such a kick out of it. So from hitting up the 99 cent store for accessories and incorporating sage footwear advice from Jeremy Scott, check out this video look by look and definitely peep the video in a loop as well. Let it get deeeeeeep in your brains.

Keri Hilson, Jessie J, and Pink wear punky combat boots.
Photo: Getty Images

In keeping with the late '80s/early '90s revival (oh, you thought the resurgence of flannel, jumpsuits, and neon at the same time were a coincidence?), the hard-as-nails combat boots of the punk/grunge/New Wave era are making a comeback in a big way. This week alone, Keri Hilson, Jessie J (now without cast!!!), and Pink have all worn variations on the classic look. But, obviously, these fashion-forward ladies aren't wearing your parents' Doc Martens. Some things remain the same, for sure, and the essence and sentiment, of course, persist through ages, but Keri, Jessie J, and Pink are wearing iterations on a stand-by, updated for the current times.

Menswear has been TAKING OVER our lives as of late! We don't know about you guys, but we cannot stop buying button-up blouses and loafers—it's probably because the outfit options are limitless with menswear-inspired ensembles. You can dress them up or dress them down for any occasion, but one of our FAVE (and ballsy!) accessories to pair with any outfit is a bow tie. Large, small, floppy, bright, or subtle—it doesn't matter what kind of bow tie you decide to sport, it's all about how you wear it. We picked three bloggers who ooze so much coolness in their menswear outfits, and BOY, are we jealous!
