MTV Movie Awards 2014, Rihanna, Eminem

Did Eminem and Rihanna nail their live performance of "Monster," or what? The duo sounded amazing (natch) on the MTV Movie Awards stage, but they also totally brought it in the fashion department. TBH, we let out a little collective squeal of delight when we saw that they decided to mimic their musical chemistry with matching satin bomber jackets—just as besties should! The sheen on Eminem's olive number gave it a polished finish, and Rih was his perfect counterpoint in white.

In case you missed the news: Rihanna and Eminem are performing at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards. Yep, in five days the duo will perform "The Monster" for the first time live ever. (EVER!!!) Sunday will mark the first time they've been reunited on stage in three years, but it definitely won't be the first time Em and Rih have performed together—in 2010 and 2011 they performed "Love the Way You Lie" a handful of times at various tour dates and awards shows, including the 2010 VMAs. *hair flip*

In honor of their performance (and to make the time between now and Sunday as Rihanna and Eminem-filled as possible), we figured we'd take a look back at their past performance style. Leggo!

2010 LAST GIRL ON EARTH TOUR

One of the first times they sang together live was at Rihanna's 2010 Last Girl on Earth tour, where Rih had her short red 'do and wore a one-shoulder jumpsuit made from, essentially, straps. Maybe she'll break it out for the Movie Awards? We wouldn't mind seeing that shoulder cage again, TBH.

Later that summer, they teamed up at the 2010 VMAs, with Em in head-to-toe black with a white tee and Rih in a Madonna "Like A Virgin"-inspired tulle skirt and bra. Rih's red hair was longer, and she accessorized with a Jennifer Behr crystal headwrap. It's one of her best looks, IMHO.

Eminem's "Rap God" video is on its way! Em released a teaser for the video and he's wearing...a suit? Like, I think the last time Eminem wore a suit was in the "Without Me" video when he was playing a game show host? Dude doesn't wear suits, so we're going to cherish seeing him in a jacket, even if it is extremely shiny. His sunglasses are likely in place to shield his eyes from the sheen coming off that suit.

Black is the new black.

Thirteen years ago, Eminem released The Marshall Mathers LP and the world was formally introduced to the ~real~ Slim Shady: crisp white tees, baggy jeans, a ton of du-rags and a platinum blonde buzz-cut. OK, so the really real Slim Shady (aka: Marshall Mathers), is actually a natural brunette—but Em’s blonde locks quickly became synonymous with his rap persona during his breakthrough era. In fact, Em kept bleaching his hair through 2009, when he reemerged from a short hiatus with Relapse, his sixth studio album, and first debuted his dark, natural color.

At that point, he’d also kicked a few bad habits, beefed up his physique and sharpened his style game: he traded du-rags for military caps and beanies and swapped saggy tracksuits for leather bombers—but that was just the beginning of the evolution of Marshall Mathers. Flash forward to last May, when Em announced he was working on a new album. That album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, was released today and is a sequel to his eponymous 2000 EP. Em went back to blonde for MMLP2 and told Rolling Stone in an upcoming cover story that he credits his manager for the throwback 'do idea.

"And once the songs started to come together and the picture got a little more clear of what it was gonna be, [my manager] hit me with the idea and I was like ‘Yo, you know I thought about that, right?’ And he was like, ‘Well you know, why not?’ And I was like ‘I don’t know how it’s gonna look. I haven’t had it in how many f****** years? Five, six years.’ I was like, ‘I’m so used to it being dark,’ you know. So I just tried it. And I was like ‘F*** it.’”

Eminem is back, y'all. The video for his first single, "Berzerk," off of his upcoming release, The Marshall Mathers LP 2 was just released and is FULL of references to '80s rap, features a slew of celeb cameos, and involves a lotta outfit changes. "Bezerk," and Em's eagerly-awaited return, were teased during the 2013 VMAs, when the song was previewed in a Beats by Dre commercial. On to da looks:

Eminem may be more of an advocate for the plain white or black tee on stage, but that's not stopping him from celebrating his first headlining shows in Japan since 2003 with a commemorative graphic t-shirt. Shady is linking up with streetwear giant Stussy for a limited edition "Recovery Japan Tour 2012" tee. The short-sleeve crewneck features a black-and-white headshot of Em on the front bordered by classic Stussy text and graphics with "Eminem" in the typical styling of all caps and a backwards second "E". On the back, "Not Afraid!!" is scrawled across the shoulders in the traditional Stussy font. The special edition shirt will hit select Stussy stores' shelves on August 25 and be available for ¥5,250 JPY (that's about $67 USD).

Reimagined Beyoncé and Eminem paintings.
Photo: Getty Images

Maybe it was Snooki's new hair or Gaga's impression of a giant black pearl or all nine outfits Little Miss Selena Gomez wore hosting the 2011 MTV EMA in Belfast that had us so distracted. Whatever the reason, in all our haste, we somehow managed to glaze over these AMAZEBALLS works of art that lined the walls at the MTV Voices Dinner (which BTW honored Justin Bieber for his exemplary charity efforts) following the event. I meaaaannn, Beyoncé as Queen Elizabeth I?? A literal QUEEN BEY??!? *head explodes* We'd actually love to see Bey pop and lock in one of these filigree neck ruffles at some point, though the sleeves might be a little too voluminous and therefore restricting for that "Run The World (Girls)" routine. This reimagination of Eminem as some sort of decorated nobleman is also deliciously unreal. To the point where we're cocking our heads to the side, wondering if it wouldn't be too strange-making to see Em in this kind of old-timey military garb IRL.

The style theatrics witnessed on the red carpet at last night's 53rd Annual Grammy Awards were just the beginning. Onstage was where the real fashion drama went down. Performing stars slipped out of their fancy suits and frocks (or their green egg, in Lady Gaga's case), and into fierce performance outfits.

KATY PERRY: Love was in the air when Katy Perry hit the stage to perform. While footage of her wedding to Russell Brand played in the background, Katy, in a bejeweled Giorgio Armani tutu, belted out "Not Like the Movies." So sweet.

LADY GAGA: After teasing everyone on the red carpet by incapsulating herself in a womb/egg, Lady Gaga emerged in a Mugler by Nicola Formichetti-designed yolk-colored while performing "Born This Way."

RIHANNA AND EMINEM: We've seen this duo perform together before, and (save for Eminem's constant serious-face) they always seem to shake it up style-wise. This time, Rihanna wore a blooming yellow and black Christian Dior ball gown, while Eminem wore a black leather jacket with a hoodie and black jeans.

CEE LO GREEN AND GWYNETH PALTROW: While Gwyneth Paltrow looked rather demure (if you don't count the time she jumped on the piano and started dancing around), Cee Lo Green totally outdid himself during his performance of "Forget You." The rapper dressed as a peacock muppet. Need we say more?

JADEN SMITH, JUSTIN BIEBER, AND USHER: In the shock of the night, boy-phenom Justin Bieber walked away with zero Grammys (he's young...he still has time), but he did perk up the crowd with a medley performance of his songs. Jaden Smith (in leopard print pants) and Usher (in an electric blue getup) gave him moral support.

RIHANNA AND DRAKE: Wearing a fringed bustier set, Rihanna shook and shimmied onstage during a calypso-like rendition of "What's My Name," which she performed with Drake, who wore all black (what's up with the rappers wearing straight black onstage?).

Kanye West suited up and ready to go at the Rodarte show.
Photo: Getty Images

Kanye West had quite the busy week! After performing at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in a BRIGHT RED suit Sunday night, Kanye West jetted backed to the East Coast to perform at the Eminem and Jay-Z show Monday night at Yankee Stadium in New York City. And not one to ignore his fashion sense, Kanye West showed up at the Rodarte Spring 2011 fashion show yesterday, just a few days after he appeared at the Marc Jacobs store for Fashion's Night Out. For the fashion show, he wore a super stylish black suit and white sneakers, probably part of his new fashion movement — dubbed "The Rosewood Movement" — an effort to revamp his image from sassy streetwear to sophisticated suits. Well, it certainly looks like Kanye West's "movement" is well on its way.
