She once fronted Calvin Klein's beauty campaign, works latex and lace like nobody’s business, and serves as an aspirational style icon for ‘90s girls everywhere (myself included). But nowadays Shirley Manson is quick to tell you she’s NOT a quote-unquote fashion person. “I really don’t give it too much thought,” the Garbage frontwoman told MTV Style when we caught up with her just before the band's concert on May 22 in New York. “I’m just not that tuned in now.” She wasn't kidding, as she didn't even namecheck what she was wearing that day, save for her Alexander Wang leather jacket and LAMB shoes (gifted by Gwen herself, natch). But with the group's newest release, the so-awesome-it-hurts Not Your Kind Of People, Manson’s about to get back in the fashion game… onstage, anyway. She has a stylist for the first time on Garbage’s massive world tour this summer, so that means there’s plenty more hot pants, minidresses, and heels to come. Oh, and as for that iconic pink boa? We’ll just have to wait and see….
The hilarious and humble rock star filled us in on her wardrobe, the problems with wearing heels onstage, and the perks of being famous (hint: free clothes) in this exclusive video. Watch it below, and then go and crank up “Blood for Poppies” as loud as you can.

As a ‘90s kid growing up in Nashville, Tennessee, Shirley Manson was IT. She had flame-red hair, porcelain skin, kohl-rimmed eyes, and an affinity for black. In other words, she was everything I wasn’t and everything I dreamed about becoming, especially while I sat bored in my middle school history class (probably humming “Only Happy When It Rains” underneath my breath). Since Garbage’s beginnings back in 1994, the Scottish singer has proven that you can look amazing and rock out at the same time, and I love her for it. She was the rough-and-tumble cool girl in the band’s early days, pairing black dresses with combat boots and fishnets or using her pink boa as a stage prop at a show in Germany-yes, the same boa that graced their 1995 debut self-titled album. Over the years, Manson has stomped all over the fashion map, wearing everything from punky schoolgirl-inspired outfits to suspenders to pretty much every type of mini dress under the sun. Before Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, Manson was the ultimate 1990s fashion star, and still is- even after the decade has ended.

Since we seem to be about all things '90s right now—seriously, there's a retro cultural shift going on harkening the days of flannel and baby doll dresses—we were beyond excited to see Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson in the latest issue of V magazine. Arguably the female touchstone of 1990s alternative rock, Ms. Manson was all about en fuego hair, mega attitude, shrunken tees, blood lips, and a set of pipes that could out-snarl the most sinewy of wolves. She's remained an inspiration to legions of female musicians—from Katy Perry to Karen O—and she and the members of Garbage are returning with their first batch of new music since 2005. While on music hiatus, Shirley began acting and had a recurring role on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and all throughout her multifaceted career, she has maintained a fiercely original sense of style. It's hard to believe, especially from these photos, that she's *gasp* 45 years old and rocking designer lace 'n' latex like nobody's biz. Ahem, waiter? We'll have what Shirley's having!

There's a new, young, and wildly talented firecracker of a pop star channeling Madonna these days, and her name is Sky Ferreira. We could make a list of why we heart the 19-year-old—the Bloodshy & Avant-produced pop gems, her towering Calvin Klein billboards in SoHo, her penchant for jeggings—but now there's a new DROP DEAD GORGE reason in this V magazine Music Issue spread, shot by the legendary Mario Testino. Holy bangles!
MTV style caught up with Sky this past weekend and dished heavy about Madonna, music, Fashion Week plans, OH, and we also gabbed about her Twitter BFF (Azealia Banks) and her IRL BFF (Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson).
