'TRL' and the 2000s in a nutshell.

Today is the day! Are you ready for Total Ariana Live tonight at 7 p.m. on MTV? We definitely are. Not only is there going to be a stripped-down version of "Problem" (which I haven't been able to get out of my head all summer FYI), we'll also hear a brand new song from the pint-size powerhouse: "Break Free." What's more is that we're totally stoked about TRL coming back! (Or this ~Ariana~ version of it, at least.) You know TRL, the decade-long mainstay that invited the biggest celebrities and performers straight into your living room? Years before Belieber Fever swept the nation or 5 Seconds of Summer penned their ode to skivvies, and when Miley was living a double life as Hannah Montana.

Because we're feeling nostalgic, we gathered a collection of photos from some of our favorite style moments (most of these are from the Carson Daly years, because he's the prince of TRL).

While Justin and Britney might have pioneered the look, they weren't the only couple's matching. Jay Z and Beyonce were double-denim mirror images of each other years before they actually became a couple. Sometimes you're just on the same wavelength, you know? Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey also wore matching black tees and leather pants.

Katy Perry is doing the most in her selfie.
Photos: Katy Perry's Instagram

Katy Perry debuted a new look on Instagram last night and we're not just talking about those bleached eyebrows. KP's baby hairs come on the heels of Rita Ora and FKA twigs doing the same with similar coiffures. That's three, which ~officially~ makes it a trend. For those unfamiliar with what Katy's doing, she's gelling down her bangs, then styling them (traditionally with a toothbrush) in waves. Still curious about the mechanics? I rounded up a couple of handy tutorials here and here.

It's a little tough to properly stalk an award show's red carpet when the pre-show is streaming instead of being televised, because buffering always seems to happen at the exact moment Nicki Minaj takes over your screen–and the second you get a proper glimpse, your screen goes black, and then your heart breaks in half. Just me? Oh. Anyway! The stars seeeeriously turned it out for tonight's Billboard Awards red carpet, even if Time Warner Cable didn't appreciate it as much as I did.

Remember back when Nicki used to show up to red carpets looking like a Harajuku doll in tiered, technicolor dresses and pink wigs (which may or may not have been cast off to Rihanna as hand-me-downs)? That's nothing but a distant memory, and I, for one, couldn't be more thrilled, not because I don't love the old Nicki, but because I love the new Nicki even more. Tonight, she chose an Alexander McQueen gown that was totally sophisticated and super chic, or as super chic as underboob can possibly be—it was basically the MTV Movie Awards all over again, but with less jewelry and more cutouts.

Moms are great. They teach you how to do stuff. They tuck you in at night. They fix you soup when you're sick. And they bestow unto you the miracle of life (well, some of the time—adoptive moms, what up!). Moms are a lot of warm and fuzzy things, but "indisputably stylish" isn't a trait that's thrown around a lot. (See: mom jeans.) BUT if your mom is one of the following 9 celebrities, that's another story.

Aside from being super-famous before she was even born (*achem*), Blue Ivy Carter also gets to have one of the most fashionable women in the world as a mother. Mom Beyonce's wardrobe is just as Sasha Fierce as ever, just now with some added hints of maternal goddess.

Jennifer Lopez

In addition to serving up a whole lotta half-naked dudes (#hey), Jennifer Lopez's new music video for "I Luh Ya Papi" serves up some gender equality realness. At the beginning of the video, a record label exec is pitching video locations to J.Lo and her friends (I always bring mine to meetings too) and they're, like, really terrible. A water park? How about no. The zoo? Hard pass. Jennifer and her friends decide the video should feature Jennifer in the role of a ~typical~ video guy, with the gender roles reversed. There is, for example, a shirtless man washing a car/his body while J.Lo and her friends look on. Typical Thursday where I come from, TBH.

One of biggest gender reversals in the video, at least fashion-wise, though, is when J.Lo dons a jumpsuit that is quite reminiscent of her infamous 2000 Grammys dress. I can't believe people made a big deal about this, you guys. She was wearing a full-length Versace gown that showed a little bit of chest and stomach skin. Everything else was covered. Simon Cowell wore deeper Vs on American Idol every Tuesday and Wednesday night on network TV. Anyway, it seems that because she is imitating men in her video, J.Lo wears a similar print in a similar color scheme, but it ends in pants, rather than a skirt. Talk about a power suit, riiight?

Jennifer Lopez Adam Lambert

By now you might've peeped all the killer 2013 Billboard Music Awards red carpet looks, but, HOMG, y'all, we need to talk about the performance outfits. We're straight-up astounded by all the sartorial realness we've seen onstage tonight, particularly from the likes of Ms. Jennifer Lopez. She BA-ROUGHT it in a fiery head-to-toe red ensemble while singing "Live It Up" alongside Pitbull. She sported The Blonds sequin red leotard with out-of-this-world feather sleeves and matching thigh-high studded peep-toe boots. For her beauty look, JLo wore straight dark blonde strands with piecey bangs, a smokey eye and nude lip. Halfway through her performance, though, we couldn't help but think her ensemble reminded us SO much of something we had seen before...

Jennifer Lopez 2013 Grammys

Almost exactly a year ago, Angelina Jolie debuted her infamous right leg at the Oscars and, lucky for us, it's baaaccckk! On the Grammys red carpet, Jennifer Lopez sported a black, one-shoulder Anthony Vaccarello satin gown with a slit up to gosh-knows-where, and we can't stop staring it. (Sorry!) If you can tear your eyes away from her toned thighs, you'll see she accessorized with killer strappy gold and black stilettos, a gold paneled clutch, SERIOUSLY impressive bangles, and diamond stud earrings. For her beauty game, she pulled her hair back into a tight high bun and went for black liner all around her eyes. She finished the look with a glossy nude lip and bronzed cheeks. But, um, have y'all peeped her nails yet? IN. SANE.

With so many winter awards shows running, it's hard to stand out from the crowd. While we'll always have a soft spot for that little music event in February, the Golden Globe Awards are absolutely one of our favorite shows because the worlds of film and television merge for one magical night of sartorial one-upping. From silver screen starlets like Anne Hathaway to small screen sweethearts like Sarah Hyland and even soundtrack songstresses like Taylor Swift, the PYTs turned it out for the Globes step-and-repeat, and while it was a lofty task, we've whittled it all down into our list of the top 10 best dressed ladies of the night.

Anne Hathaway

The lovely, doe-eyed Anne Hathaway shone bright in winter white Chanel couture. The dress, surprisingly resurfaced from the label's Spring 2009 archives, featured a sleek strapless neckline cutting straight across the chest and the look of being two pieces. The Les Miserables star won big tonight not only for her award as "Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture," but also with her strikingly simple column dress.

Gwen Stefani at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2005 and 1998.
Photo: Getty Images

Considering it's a total mishmash of some of the most creative stars in music, there's no question the MTV Video Music Awards is pretty much a MECCA for originality. We've seen some seriously awesome outfits pass through the VMAs in the show's 28-year-run, from Madonna's "Like a Virgin" wedding gown to Lady Gaga's meat dress and literally everything in between. Although we hate to play favorites, we've narrowed down the list of the most original VMA outfits over the two-plus decades...and noticed some repeat offenders along the way. Exhibit A: No Doubt frontwoman and fashion MVP Gwen Stefani, who manages to step out on a style limb every single appearance, and STILL looks amazing. Way back in 1998, she worked one of her most iconic outfits yet- a fuzzy blue bikini top, baggy pants under a skirt (!) and platform sandals. Oh hiiii '90s! She also topped off all of this in Gwen S. staples, wild blue hair and a bindi... a look that's been replicated by other red carpet originals over the years.

Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Jennifer Lopez.

Last time we brought Forbes across your radar, it was back in May when the business mag showcased Selana Gomez and Justin Bieber as a super cute biz-casual couple for its Celebrity 100 list. That was pretty awesome, but now even more of our MTV favorites are hitting the pages of the glossy...and they're bringing some SERIOUS girl power in tow. We're talking about Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Jennifer Lopez, who made the annual 100 Most Powerful Women List, coming in at 14, 32, and 38, respectively. Talk about impressive! Oh, and gasp!- get this- these music stars all ranked higher than Anna Wintour. Whoa.

I love these two as a couple. What a festive way to celebrate two important events in their life. Mariah looks like a dream.
