Michelle Obama presents Best Picture to "Argo" at 2013 Oscars.
Photo: Getty Images

There were a lot of surprises at tonight's 2013 Oscars, but our favorite has to have been the reveal of Michelle Obama presenting the award for "Best Picture" to Argo. A grinning and bow tied Jack Nicholson introduced his special presenting guest: Madame FLOTUS who appeared via satellite video from the White House. Breaking away from the White House Oscar party, Michelle twirled toward camera wearing a STUNNING Naeem Khan gown covered in zillions of silver beads that glittered in the camera lights.

Michelle Obama with President Barack Obama at the 2013 Inaugural Ball.
Photo: Getty

It was on this same night four years ago that Jason Wu went from a young designer to a household name, as the then brand new first lady Michelle Obama walked out in one of his dresses at the inaugural ball. He's had a big couple of years, scoring a collab with Target and launching Miss Wu, but being selected to once again dress the FLOTUS on one of her biggest nights is nothing short of a coup for the designer. The custom made chiffon and velvet dress the first lady wore to dance with her husband to "Lets Stay Together," sung by Jennifer Hudson, was nothing short of breathtaking, with a high, halter neckline and draped back. Choosing red, rather than her first inauguration's bridal white was spectacular, and Obama looked fresh and fierce with her brand new bangs.

Sasha Obama Malia Obama

The Obama family celebrates the presidential victory in Chicago.
Photo: Getty Images

Alright, so we all know that last night's election was really all about Barack Obama. And it should be! He IS the newly re-elected Commander in Chief, and all. But the President wasn't the only one killing it onstage in Chicago, since the girls in the family brought some serious fashion A-game. Michelle is already a style icon on her own, looking stunning per usual in Michael Kors — but if you ask us, we think Malia and Sasha deserve a shoutout of their own! Both clad in knee-length tulip skirts (shimmery blue for Malia, green printed for Sasha) and dark tops, the First Daughters worked these totally cute, totally holiday season-appropriate outfits perfectly. So can you really blame us for dying to copy them? Um, no way.

French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy at the G8 Summit in Deauville, France, on May 26, 2011, Alexa Chung at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London on June 9, 2010, and U.S. first lady Michelle Obama at the White House in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 18, 2009.

Not that anyone's ever accused me to my face of being a "lady" or "elegant" but there's something about the return of this particular shoe trend that simply irritates me. Some chicks have beef with bows. Or polka dots. Or hearts. Or Peter Pan collars. They find them "too girly" or cloying and it's definitely how I'd qualify the inconsequential nubbin of a heel known as the kitten heel. Plus, and this might be just me but there's something strangely low rent about a kitten heel. A sort of "fancydrag." Like something that scrabbles with awkward elbows and scabby knees to a higher station because they read many times (by match light) in the only picture book they owned (known to you and I as a magazine) when they lived in subway tunnels, that this shoe was somehow "special."

Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian on Feb. 18.
Photo: Getty Images

• The internet is BLOWING UP about the news that Kim Kardashian is now engaged to New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries. Word is that Kris proposed at home and skipped popping the question in favor of spelling it in rose petals (AWW!). No word yet on whether the couple will follow in Khloe and Lamar's footsteps with a joint fragrance launch, (especially given Kim just released her newest one this month). One thing for sure, that secures at LEAST one more butt in the seats at the Nets Brooklyn arena next season. {PopEater}

• Despite some mumblings about Michelle Obama's outfit of choice for meeting Prince William and Kate Middleton yesterday, she hit an undeniable home run in a gorgeous ivory gown by American designer Tom Ford at Buckingham Palace. Take special note of the first lady's over-the-elbow gloves, which perfectly highlight her INCREDIBZ arms. Seriously, what's a girl gotta to do to get her trainer's number?? {Fashionista}

• Like one of those cool things at science museums that let you stick your hand in a bed of dull pins to make a pretty little imprint sculpture, accessories designer Lulu Guiness's 'Be A Pin Up' installation opened for Clerkenwell Design Week yesterday. The exhibit is reminiscent of the forgotten party favorite, and it features a GIGANTIC FULL-BODY-SIZE pin sculpture. Oh, and if your sculpture is reeeally good, you can win some free swag. {Dazed Digital}

Yves Saint Laurent snaps back in the development from the legal battle with Christian Louboutin's exclusive use of the red sole with some historical schooling. We are officially all embroiled in the crossfire of a drawn-out fashion version of You Got Served {Washington Post}

• It looks like nobody bought the dress that Lady Gaga wore for the finale of the Fall 2011 Mugler show, so Gilt Groupe ended the Gaga-stravaganza without a buyer for the frock. While we aren't sure what happens now, we can wonder and hope and email Gilt Groupe a note with the MTV Style office address and a winky emoticon. {NYMag}

Michelle Obama at the White House Correspondents' Association Gala in Washington, D.C., on April 30.
Photo: Getty Images

Dudes. I don't know how much gravitas I'm supposed to employ whilst discussing the comeliness of the first lady, especially on a day as loaded with political significance as today, but whatever the occasion, whatever the time, regardless of whatever other people wore to the White House Correspondents' Dinner, there is just no denying that Mobama looked RIDIC HOT. Right? It's basically insane. Let's break down the stats.

First of all, sure, those arms. We've been admiring that yoga divot right after the shoulder muscle for multiple seasons, so I won't dawdle there, but she's wearing a fascinating Halston dress from, like, two years ago. It's notable because it features a HELLA deep V, but it's exceptionally elegant due to its muted puce color and silky sheen. There's SOME glinting but only the amount that indicates that the dress is classy and VERY expensive. I will not delve too deeply into whatever undergarments she is working with for fear of gaucheness, but I gotta say, that kind of bias-cut fabric betrays EVERYTHING. So the fact that she's not lumpy or weirdly foamy displays a great deal of expertise. Twenty-seven points.

The hair? Extraordinary. A good eye-swoop in the front for utmost sexiness, and the large curls bring up the bob so that it not only looks as occasion appropriate as an updo but is just a lot less formal and fussy. And it's short enough that you can not only see the silver and rose gold earrings but the texture and bounce actually accentuate the curved silhouette of the jewelry as well. Eighteen points.

The necklaces however, make the look for me, and here's why. Yo, how many times can you ACTUALLY say you've seen a woman of a certain age and level of importance (who is NOT an actress or fashion designer) NAIL on-trend jewelry this hard? The layered chains (all her jewelry is by Irit Design BTW) are awesome, and the dripping portion that calls attention (but not too much attention) to her décolletage is resoundingly smoking. Forty-five bajillion points. Bonus points for being the EXACT right level of boob-ish.

Nicely done, Michelle Obama. You command the respect of those around you as your man commands the searing envy and bile of dudes around you both.

Zombie Boy a.k.a Rick Genest.
Photo: Courtesy of Thierry Mugler.

• To get the excessively tatted Rick Genest (aka Zombie Boy) to Paris to walk in the Mugler runway shows, Nicola Formichetti spared no expense—the creative director paid off Zombie's nearly $20,000 legal fees, which were preventing him from getting a passport. That's dedication (related: We love you Zombie Boy! Call us!). {Fashionologie}

• We'd always imagined that Christian Louboutin got his red sole idea from a magical fever dream or even Louis XIV. But, really, he admits in the New Yorker that the idea came while watching an assistant paint her nails. Exactly where we get all our best ideas. #fumes {Glamour}

• The Obama ladies' frocks were cute, but what really caught our eyes was Michelle, Sasha, and Malia's wrists, loaded with chunky bracelets. Hmmm, we wonder if President Obama felt left out. {Glamour}

• Inspired to rock armfuls of jewelry now? Grab these... {Refinery}

• To promote her new album, Born This Way, Lady Gaga released a photo of herself looking deliberately emaciated (prosthetic cheekbones, painted eyebrows, etc.). Thoughts? {Daily Mail}

Christie's is auctioning off a RIDIC Chanel package that includes a hotel stay in Paris, dinners, front row seats at the Chanel Couture fashion show, a meet-and-greet with Karl Lagerfeld, and a Chanel handbag. Bids are currently at $21,000 (!!!), and proceeds go to earth-preservation non-profit organizations. {Coco Perez}

• That Burberry Bonded Nappa Biker Studded Trench coat that EVERY celeb is wearing these days costs almost $8,000! Why don't you save yourself $7,940 (for college or a car or an international vacay) and DIY that ish. Here's how... {Who What Wear}

• Yo, kids, GQ magazine is on the hunt for NYC-based fashion lovers to intern in the publications Fashion Editorial department over the summer for college credit. What are you waiting for? {Fashionista}

• And, P.S.: MTV Style is hiring too! We're looking for a Production Assistant who is a fan of fashion, music and pop culture, and who can write (about fashion, music and pop culture) at a dizzying pace with a dazzling point of view—who can DANCE. {Mediabistro}

• You'd think the Gossip Girl bosses would give actress Blake Lively (Chanel's current spokesmodel) a pass to watch the brand's Fall 2011 fashion show in Paris on March 8. Alas, it does not—the actress is expected on set in New York City on the same day. {Fashion Indie}
