Katy Perry

While most people break out their winter coats when December rolls around, Katy Perry unleashes pieces from her cape collection. Last night, the "Roar" songstress attended the Unicef Snowflake Ball in a deep red dress by Naeem Khan. As we were admiring her gold-embroidered cape and applauding her for pulling off such a difficult style, we were like, "HOLD UP. Are we having déjà vu?" Upon further research, we realized that Katy not only wore a cape to the same event last year, but she again wore a similarly haltered dress by Naeem Khan. Maybe the Snowflake Ball invite suggests capes, and she's the only one following directions?

Listen, people. We know everyone can't stop talking about Miley Cyrus' twerk sesh "We Can't Stop" performance, but we have some serious VMA style moments to discuss here. Before any of the onstage shenanigans went down, we were peeping what the celebs were wearing outside the Barclays Center--you know, on that thing called a red carpet. We saw our favorite gals sporting everything from jeans and a T-shirt to super glam statement gowns, and we loved it all. As you know, though, we MUST narrow it down to our top 10 favorites, so check out who we picked below (and be sure to comment on who you liked best!).

Lady Gaga looked dashing in her all-black Prabal Gurung gown, and we know it's hitting us in a special place because we never, ever say the word "dashing." Honestly, we love seeing a sleek, goth-y Gaga wrapped up like a perfect little present, and for that, she makes it to the top of our list.

Carrie Underwood's three Academy Of Country Music Awards looks.
Photo: Getty

You might not realize it, but here at MTV Style we can get a little bit country. We like to think of ourselves as open-minded, but it doesn't even take an open mind to get down with some of our favorite Nashville ladies. Arguably two of the reigning queens of country, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, took to last night's 2013 Academy of Country Music Awards red carpet AND stage in multiple looks that have us swooning. Both women brought it consistently throughout the night, but we have to talk about Carrie first because not only did she do red carpet to stage style like a pro, but she changed her performance look TWICE throughout the night. Starting out the evening in a floral photo printed Naeem Khan gown and a flippy updo, Underwood was a picture of spring. The dress, which featured a sweetheart neckline, A-line silhouette and contrast black sash, also had an epic blown-up tulip print. A daring choice on a carpet which was otherwise relatively tame, and we're wholly in support of it.

Michelle Obama

There were a lot of surprises at tonight's 2013 Oscars, but our favorite has to have been the reveal of Michelle Obama presenting the award for "Best Picture" to Argo. A grinning and bow tied Jack Nicholson introduced his special presenting guest: Madame FLOTUS who appeared via satellite video from the White House. Breaking away from the White House Oscar party, Michelle twirled toward camera wearing a STUNNING Naeem Khan gown covered in zillions of silver beads that glittered in the camera lights.

With so many winter awards shows running, it's hard to stand out from the crowd. While we'll always have a soft spot for that little music event in February, the Golden Globe Awards are absolutely one of our favorite shows because the worlds of film and television merge for one magical night of sartorial one-upping. From silver screen starlets like Anne Hathaway to small screen sweethearts like Sarah Hyland and even soundtrack songstresses like Taylor Swift, the PYTs turned it out for the Globes step-and-repeat, and while it was a lofty task, we've whittled it all down into our list of the top 10 best dressed ladies of the night.

Anne Hathaway

The lovely, doe-eyed Anne Hathaway shone bright in winter white Chanel couture. The dress, surprisingly resurfaced from the label's Spring 2009 archives, featured a sleek strapless neckline cutting straight across the chest and the look of being two pieces. The Les Miserables star won big tonight not only for her award as "Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture," but also with her strikingly simple column dress.

Katy Perry Selena Gomez Unicef Snowflake Ball

We’re total suckers for the holiday season because we get to see celebs transform their red carpet looks from short, summery frocks into killer floor-length shimmery gowns. Last night at the UNICEF Snowflake Ball our fashion-y faves Katy Perry and Selena Gomez were no exception—they oozed vampy-chic gorgeousness in dark, sweeping halter dresses that we need to discuss. Katy Perry wore a curve-hugging, mesh beaded brocade Naeem Khan gown complete with a STUNNING sheer cape and sequin beaded belt. She accessorized with oversized 45-carat blue sapphire and diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, a matching geometric cuff and a satin clutch. For her beauty game, she kept her raven locks sleek and straight and opted for a smoky eye and nude lip with her golden marble nail art. Perf!

That headline seems almost head-smackingly "DUHHHH," right? I mean, if I were attending, let alone performing for, an event with "DIVAS" in the name, a word so fecund with high-maintenance, red-clawwed, femme dominance, OF COURSE, I'd bury myself in yards of metallics, fur stoles, and the world's butteriest leathers. Florence Welch, Jessie J, and Mary J. Blige are already, day-to-day, three of the most show-stoppingly clothed ladies of late, so we expected nothing short of being totally floored by their VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul outfits. Much to our delight, the trifecta did not disappoint, pulling out all the attention-commanding stops for their red carpet and (*cough* multiple) performance looks for an ascent to ear-poppingly dramatic FASHUN.

Florence Welch glittered down the red carpet in a sequin-drenched white-nude dress from the Antonio Berardi spring 2012 collection. As if being steeped in shimmer were not enough, her long-sleeved mock turtleneck dress also featured an eye-catching full mullet hem. Jessie J dared to wear one of Falguni & Shane Peacock's notoriously provocative creations from the spring 2012 line. The black and gold gown is panelled with sheer black fabric of varying degrees of transluscent and emblazoned with ornate and *achem* strategically placed gold embellishments. Originally a midi-length, Jessie added the lower black ruffle to extend the dress to floor-length. Mary J. wore head-to-toe fall 2011 Michael Kors, pairing a slinky ruched nude gown splattered with rhinestones under a MASSIVE blonde fur jacket.

Naeem Khan Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

New York Fashion Week is as much about discovering next season's trends as it is about picking out the gowns the celebs will be wearing right away for awards shows (like THIS Sunday for the Emmys). If there's one designer who's become a red carpet FAVE for legions of ladies who want to look LUXE, it's Naeem Khan, master of the fanciest of fancy gowns. We're talking beaded looks of royal refinement as befitting the Queen of Jordan and our First Lady (really, he dresses them). So, when stars like Taylor Swift or Beyoncé have a particularly ballad-y performance coming up, or when actresses Zooey Deschanel and Lea Michele need to class up the carpet, they turn to Naeem's brand of uptown elegance. Khan describes his Spring 2012 collection as "COLORFUL RACY GLAMOUR," (all-caps), and while we get the colorful and glamorous, we didn't necessarily get racy—unless you count the Marilyn Manson aspect.

Yesterday was the last day of New York Fashion Week (sniff-sniff), and it ended with a bang...and poodles. Check out our favorite looks below.

L.A.M.B.: The models at L.A.M.B.'s fall fashion show had serious attitudes. But, it was all part of the show, which featured military-inspired jackets and trousers, Rasta-influenced looks, and glamorous/billowy gowns.

NAEEM KHAN: Naeem Khan's collection was full of glittering gowns and embellished minis—all the ingredients for a perfect red carpet look.

RALPH LAUREN: Inspired by Asian culture and fashion, Ralph Lauren infused fine silks, bright embroideries, regal velvet, and super-slim silhouettes into his fall collection.

ISAAC MIZRAHI: If there's one thing Isaac Mizrahi's fashion shows are not, it is boring. In a nod to the 1950s sock-hop, each model—in A-line coats, tea dresses, and faille skirts—wore a poodle-esque pouf atop her head. Oh, and real poodles, whose hair was dyed in candy shades, walked the runway, too.

CALVIN KLEIN: Minimalist chic was the name of the game at Calvin Klein's fall fashion show, with models parading out in muted hues, rich fabrics, and looser silhouettes.

Fashion Week just wrapped up in New York, and MTV Style was ALL OVER IT, covering shows, spotting famous people in the front row, and more. But what happens when you send MTV's Twitter expert and first-ever TJ, Gabi Gregg, to the catwalk? We wanted to find out! See below for MTV TJ Gabi Gregg's fun Fashion Week experience!

Hi, MTV Style! I’m Gabi Gregg, MTV’s first-ever TJ, MTV's official Twitter correspondent! I’m here to give a voice to the fans of MTV and tweet (@MTVTJ) all about what goes on here behind the scenes. I’ve also been a fashion blogger for two years now for, so I couldn’t be more excited to move to New York for this gig and live in the fashion capital! When I found out I’d be living in NYC this fall, New York Fashion Week is one of the first things I got excited about. But guess what?! Now that I work at MTV, I didn't get to go to most of it because I had to fly to Los Angeles for the Video Music Awards! (I know, woe is me). But, thankfully, I got back to NYC just in time for the last day of Fashion Week, and I went to two shows: Naeem Khan and L.A.M.B.!

When I walked into the Naeem Khan show at Lincoln Center, I managed to pretend to look like I knew what I was doing well enough to find my seat. It started 40 minutes late, but the clothes were worth the wait. Khan’s Collection was gorgeous. It consisted mostly of brightly colored evening wear suitable for the St. Tropez–bound woman. Though there was an obvious tropical influence, Khan kept his signature Indian inspiration by embellishing almost every piece with gorgeous jewels, sequins, and beads. Most of the dresses and caftans were bright, but even the neutral pieces he sent down the runway popped — the white floor-length gown with feathers, for example, was obviously a crowd favorite (myself included).

Then, I popped over to the L.A.M.B. show, designed by Gwen Stefani. These clothes were on the opposite end of the spectrum. It looked like a fusion of Afro-Caribbean, grunge, and menswear. Gwen mixed tribal prints and plaid, and used asymmetry in almost every look. My favorite piece was definitely the cap-sleeve blazer. And while I wouldn't wear most of the collection, the show itself was the best part; I had a great view of her husband Gavin Rossdale and her children. Kingston Stefani-Rossdale even took a bow with Gwen at the end! Awww. I live-tweeted both shows, but my fingers could barely type fast enough! So many outfits, so little time.

Overall, my first real Fashion Week experience was more than I expected. I loved seeing two vastly different designers back to back, and being a part of a crowd as fashion-obsessed as I am felt amazing. On my way out, I also had an OMG moment — walking next to Russell Simmons and Christian Siriano! Those two are definitely on the opposite side of the fashion spectrum, just like the two shows I had just seen. It was a perfect ending to an already amazing night.
