We've already discussed beauty trends from New York Fashion Week, so now we need to discuss the other major player on runways that isn't, y'know, clothing: HAIR! After looking at basically every Fashion Week picture that exists, we decided the number one trend that ruled the runways, hair-wise, was braids. There were braids everywhere. Some people may think braids are reserved for warmer seasons like spring or summer, but those people would be wrong. Fall/Winter braids are obviously becoming a ~thing~, so you better make sure your fingers are nimble come September. Check out braids from NYFW below!

BRAIDED BANGS

Braided bangs, a somewhat underused plait in the braid world of which I'm queen, showed up twice on runways. The first was at Creatures of the Wind, where the braid practically covered the model's entire forehead, and the second was at Nanette Lepore where it was thinner and sleeker. You don't need actual bangs to get yourself some braided bangs—just comb some of your hair forward and voilà.

Scott Mou knows music. Not only is he the buyer for famed NYC music retailer, Other Music, but the long-time DJ-around-town also put out a few albums under the band name Jane, an electronic duo whose second half was Animal Collective’s Panda Bear (the two once worked together at Other). So, it was no surprise that we caught Mou behind the booth at Nanette Lepore’s Spring 2014 runway show—the man’s in high demand! What we were surprised by, however, was Mou’s decision to roll out the runway music via compact disc—YES, an actual burned c.d.! Holy ‘90s, right? Well, holy ‘80s, to be exact. Mou used a collection of songs (and covers of songs) from the era of shoulder pads and parachute pants for Lepore's soundtrack. And TBH, it was nothing short of amazing.

BTW: Seeing as how it’s 90+ degrees in New York today, Nanette's collection, which included delicate spaghetti-strap dresses, bold corals, light, lace neutrals and floral-print bathing suits, was spot-on for spring AND this sweltering weather. Although, we’d much prefer wearing her laid-back, beach-ready line with our feet in the sand, not on the asphalt. #DREAMS

Emma Roberts

It seems like every day there's a new designer x celebrity collaboration, but less ubiquitous are the moments when a star takes the backseat and serves as the creative inspiration and, in return, the promotional vehicle for a line or an individual piece. Such is the case with Emma Roberts and the limited edition sunglasses Nanette Lepore designed for her. Last night was the official launch of the Emma-inspired shades, and Roberts, Lepore, and Vogue Eyewear celebrated in style with an intimate party on the VIP floor of the 5th Avenue Sunglass Hut. (Yes, that's a thing that exists, and we have the pictures to prove it.) We caught up with Emma herself to get her reaction to the finished product and serving as Nanette's design inspiration.

Oy, Fashion Week. There's so much to pay attention to when you're out and about at the shows that sometimes it feels like your neck is going to snap from how fast you're looking from one thing to the next, but that's part of the excitement of it all, right?! *Rubs neck and grimaces* There was a lot to look at this season, but we kept finding ourselves gravitating away from the clothes and up to the hair and makeup, and there were two trends that spoke to us in particular. It's not THAT surprising that we loved these two looks, because both were also very popular when we were in our fashion coming-of-age/experimentation phase, also known as middle school. We're talking, of course, about crimped hair and bright eyeshadow. While for a long time after our youth we scorned at both of these looks, deeming them nerdy and passe, enough time has gone by (*clutches walker*) that they're starting to look fresh again. It might also be that now we're grownups and have more of a grasp on the rest of our fashion game, so we would know better than to pair either of these with, say, JNCO jeans or really puffy bangs (which should never come back, just saying). Get your crimping tools hot and your eyeshadow brush fluffed, and let's go!

Crimped Hair

Cute crimped styles that are nothing like middle school at Timo Weiland, Betsy Johnson, and Mara Hoffman.

We're always tempted by the "stylers" in the drugstore. You know the ones, they're like combination straightener, curler, crimper, and then there are a bunch of other plates that you can switch in and out to do who knows what to your locks? We've avoided them up until now (and are unhealthily attached to our beloved ghd styler), but the runways have made us think we might have to invest in an extra tool. We saw crimped hair at Betsey Johnson, Mara Hoffman, and Timo Weiland, and we have to say, we love it. This look only works on already straight locks, we think, although it might be weird and cool (or a disaster) to try and crimp your curls. We especially love Timo's version, where the crimped hair comes as a surprise in a long, thick braid. Since it's not all in your face, the crimping is more subtle, like an extra flourish rather than a whole, bold look. We also love the idea of pairing crimped hair with a matching outfit in mixed textures, so that the concept is kept consistent in both beauty and fashion.

Prints and pastels were a Spring 2013 treat at Nanette Lepore.
Photo: Getty

Bright eyes, bright prints and bright detailing on everything from shoes to belts dominated at Nanette Lepore's Spring 2013 show at New York Fashion Week today. One of our favorite trends from this season's shows has been electric, pastel colors swept across eyes--we saw a more subdued, cat eye version at Alice + Olivia as well--and the Lepore lids were one of our favorite iterations yet. Opaque color reaching to just below the brow made the models eyes pop, whether it was in metallic peach, blue, or white. Moving from the top down, silhouettes were modern and airy, with one shoulder pieces, halters, keyholes, and more flowing into looks so bursting with prints that it looked like they were made of rainbow sherbet. After this show, we have officially found our personal color for Spring 2013 (but don't hold us to it because we like to be able to change our minds), and it's melon. Warm, orangey pink, we can't get enough. We were also wild about the mixed pastel plaids we saw on Brazilian Girls' frontwoman Sabine Sciubba, who performed her signature smooth, tropical tunes for the entirety of the show.

Nanette Lepore's debut style of sunglasses.

We love Emma Roberts. We love Nanette Lepore. So what happens when two of our favorite people combine? Just take a look at the sketch of these amazing sunglasses above, and you'll see that it's a total match made in creative heaven (seriously, Cupid would be jealous he didn't think of it first!). Yep, Nanette Lepore- known and beloved for flirty, girly dresses- has just crafted her first style of sunglasses inspired by none other than Emma herself. The pair of cat-eye frames is the latest addition to the VOGUE Eyewear Designer Series, and is inspired by retro Twenties glamour with a modern twist. As Nanette tells WWD of her 21-year-old actress muse, “She’s chic, youthful and confident in her style." Considering Emma's ability to switch from rocker to Old Hollywood to uber-trendy at the drop of a hat, who's going to argue with that?

New York Fashion Week for fall 2012 had its fair share of trends, but if there was one constant we noticed from show to show, it was the heavy use of orange. We're not just talking any orange, either, we mean gentle swaths of carrot and sienna, or all-over blasts of persimmon and atomic tangerine. It's always strange to see so many designers go for the same idea. Do they call each other up and say, "Orange for fall! I'll take neon if you go with burnt sunshine." Seriously, how do they all seem to choose the same colors? Who knows, but we like the tang of this orange thing. It seems like a hard color to pull off, but after seeing the way so many designers used it—from wool coats and lace dresses to belted trousers and mixed prints—we're excited to take a sip of this juice.

AGENT ORANGE

Some designers fully embraced orange and shouted it in loud, all-over statements. Rachel Comey paired a generously cut safety orange wool coat over black trousers and added a white clutch for a modern cosmopolitan look. Michael Kors went for super uptown glam with a fur-rimmed electric orange coat and matching silk dress. And Nanette Lepore—who always designs the sweetest array of dresses—sent diffused orange neon lace down the runway with a hint of sparkle, gray tights, and metallic blue peep-toe heels. Something to note? The makeup was kept fairly simple, but we especially like the use of matching lip color at Michael Kors.

Nicki Minaj attends the MAC Viva Glam party in New York City.
Photo: Getty Images

It's been one heck of a week, you guys. First of all, we've endured the magical collision of cray that is New York Fashion Week crossed with the Grammy Awards slashed with Valentine's Day. What else could assault our tunnel vision, rattle our fash-worshipping demons, and unleash inner banshee wails? Nicki Minaj and Ricky Martin together in New York City to launch their MAC Viva Glam collection, that's what. Nicki M continues to ramp up her neon Barbie look (which, honestly, is a welcome diversion from that Grammy Little Red Riding Hood moment), and she wore an alternating hot pink and cobalt blue Nanette Lepore dress and blazer with a killer pair of Giuseppe Zanotti heels. And Ricky? Let's just say he was sporting some muy caliente facial scruff inspired by The Artist.

Selena Gomez Cosmopolitan

Dang! Selena Gomez looks very, um, grown up on the March cover of Cosmopolitan magazine. The 19-year-old singer showed off her sultry side in a plunging pink and red floral Nanette Lepore dress paired with...no shoes! She looks totally beach ready in her summery ensemble, and we're jealous. *huddles closer to heater* Her beauty game is sooo on lock—she sported a shimmery smokey eye, peach blush, and a glossy pink lip paired with fire engine red nails and (of course) perfectly wind-blown hair. We like her minimal accessories, especially the teeny, tiny gold heart pendant around her neck. But gorgeous looks aside, we HAVE to get all mom-ish for a minute here. Isn't our girl Selena still a wee bit young to be put next to such suggestive headlines in a dress that low? Call us crazy, but we think it all looks a little bit out of place.

As is customary with everyone's favorite Manhattan melodrama, last night's episode of Gossip Girl was definitely not short of any twists or turns. Just one week shy of Blair Waldorf's (Leighton Meester) expected wedding to Prince Louis Grimaldi of Monaco (Hugo Becker), we catch up with the princess-to-be on the eve of her bachelorette party. Louis's sister Beatrice (Roxane Mesquida) resurfaces her little scheming head with renewed hope of derailing her brother's nuptial plans, this time with a very unlikely accomplice.

GG herself manages to throw a bit of a wrench in The Spectator's plans to bury her in the gossip annals, blackmailing Nate (Chace Crawford) with new information about Blair and Chuck's (Ed Westwick) car accident that halts the official launch of Serena's (Blake Lively) competing column. Serena and Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) continue their "fake" relationship, much to the dismay of Lonely Boy's publicist. Though we'll undoubtedly watch some portion of a marital ceremony next Monday night (along with GG's 100th episode!!), this mayyyy not be the end of Chair (Chuck + Blair, obvi), but if you haven't caught up yet, we won't spoil the rest for you. Check back here weekly for our fashion recap!
