Fashion Week

While yesterday was the seventh day of Fashion Week, it was not, in fact, the conclusion of NYFW. Nope, despite the event's name, it actually goes through today, which means we are not yet finished finding celebrities in the front row! Yesterday was full of faces we hadn't seen yet at NYFW—new people like the one inside Lil' Kim's body!

Much like the government (according to the Gettysburg Address), the People's Choice Awards are of the people, by the people [and] for the people. They also officially kick off awards show season, aka that time of year when gawking at pretty dresses gets us through the cruel winter. From television and movie stars to daytime talk- and game-show hosts, all of Hollywood did one thing really well with their outfits at this year's PCAs: They reminded us that below-freezing temperatures didn't affect California. Oh, and also, that neutrals are trending. Wanna know who did it best? Check out our favorite looks from the 2014 People's Choice Awards below!

Las Vegas looks good on Britney, y'all! The Princess of Pop took a break from her two-year residency at Planet Hollywood to make an appearance (and accept her first PCA!) in a Mikael D pre-Fall 2013 dress covered with silver rose appliqué detailing. Ms. Spears accessorized with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, a Kotur bag, and Broken English jewelry. Very fun, but also mature.

When we realized that the 2013 American Music Awards would showcase a whopping 16 live performances, we knew we were in for a grip of exciting brand new performance outfits. What we forgot about (momentarily) was that the stacked set list ALSO meant the red carpet would be full of high-octane #FASHUN. The stars turned it our for the AMAs step-and-repeat, and we're breaking down our favorite looks of the night.

Taylor Swift may have skipped the stage this time around, but she still won big. No, not just by looking drop dead in that glittering gold Julien MacDonald minidress. T.Swizzle also took home the award for Artist of the Year as well as Favorite Female Country Artist and Favorite Country Album.

One confusing thing about Halloween falling on a Thursday is that no one knows when to celebrate. One good thing is that people celebrate the weekend before, the day of, and the weekend after. Hello, week of costumes, we're ready for you. A slew of celebs put on their first costumes of 2013 (LBR, there's no way Paris Hilton isn't dressing up again) this past weekend, so obvi, there are plenty of photos to peep (and copy). Hey, some celebs are clever!

Ciara Iggy Azalea

The stars were out last night at the 2013 VMAs—some in more clothing than others, but they were out! And if there was ever a time to go nearly nude on a red carpet, the VMAs are it. Over the years, celebs have not been shy about showing skin: from a singular purple pasty to butt-baring chain mail draping to big slits and high hems, we thought we’d seen it all. Well, we were wrong.

Ciara (in Givenchy Fall 2010 Couture) and Iggy Azalea (in Emilio Pucci) made heads turn and do a double take in second-skin sheer dresses with strategically-placed embellishments. So that’s what Ciara meant when she told us to expect a little “bling bling!” We love the subtle sexiness these gowns bring to the carpet—no nip slips here! Although, if you do think you’ve caught a glimpse of a naughty bit, it can always be chalked up to a stray sequin.

Who else loves summertime awards shows?? *raises two hands waaaaay up because obviously we're biased* Our favorite stars coming together dressed to the warm-weather red carpet nines? Yes, PLEASE! One of our faves, the MuchMusic Video Awards popped off last night, and its step and repeat was stacked with season-appropriate stunners from Demi Lovato to Taylor Swift and everyone in between. We boiled it all down to our top five best dressed ladies of the night. Peep our picks below!

Not only did Demi win big in the show, scoring the MMVA for International Video of the Year with "Heart Attack," she slayed on the red carpet in sleek Saint Laurent. D lightened her blonde hair a touch for the event (at which she also performed). All the better to pop against that black, high-necked, long-sleeved, strong-shouldered mini, AMIRITE?

The Screen Actors Guild Awards is the one awards show that's for actors by actors. It's like the fun younger sibling to the Golden Globes, as it honors acting achievement in both film and television and guarantees a fashion PARADE that signals that last triumphant push toward the Oscars. (We're in the final stretch, people!) Usually the SAG stahhs tend to mix it up and get a bit more playful on the ol' red carpet, and for this year's 2012 SAG Awards there was no shortage of vibrant color, mega texture, cutouts, plunging necklines, volumes of feathers, and even a 1970s studded pantsuit. So what are we waiting for? Let's get into this...

Dianna Agron opted for POW color with magenta Carolina Herrera. Always the go-to designer for ladylike red carpet gowns, we think this look is very awards-friendly yet eye-catching for both the deep neckline and intricately braided updo. It's also just straight-up pretty and makes us think about springtime, Valentine's Day, and the scent of prize-winning roses.

contemporary costume award nominees

It's officially the middle of Awards Season™, and with the latest Grammy Awards announcement and Oscar nominations happening next week, things are about to kick into maximum overdrive. One awards event we are particularly fond of is the somewhat lesser known Costume Designers Guild Awards honoring costume excellence in both film and TV. For us, this is mayjah. We're OBSESSED with costumes in an unhealthy in a Krispy Kreme hamburgers kind of way. Yeah, it's disgusting, and yet we're so thrilled with this year's nominees we don't care if we're covered in powder (wigs) or grease (Gosling) when the winners are announced on Feb. 21. Who wouldn't want to cheer on Ry-Ry's Drive jacket (we actually have a member of the staff who wears this satin juggernaut on a regular basis), the soiled bridal brilliance of Bridesmaids, or Rooney Mara's supremely badassish Lisbeth Salander costumes in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Oh, and that's only the beginning where this year's costumes are concerned.

Private School Accessories

Chloe Sevigny, Bip Ling, and Naya Rivera sport back-to-school accessories.

We don't have to remind you that it's back-to-school time (we know you're woefully aware), but in these last few days of summer it's time to start thinking about what you're gonna wear on the first day back. Will you try a new look or revamp your signature style? Will you start wearing... WAIT. Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. What about those who have NO CHOICE about what to wear on the first day, you ask? What, oh what, is there to do if your first day outfit consists of the same three pieces you'll be wearing from here on out, everyday, until next summer? What about those who are UNIFORM CHALLENGED? Hold up, uni-lovelies, because we HEAR YOU, and MTV Style's got you covered!

We've already shown you the top ten backpacks for tricking out your fall ensembles (even if they're in dreary navy wool) as well as the cutest and most comfortable flat shoes for jazzing up the halls (and your lackluster separates). Now, we have the perfect accessory guide for tying it all together and adding a little oomph to the blech of any school uniform. From flounce-trimmed ankle socks and lightning bolt rings (very Harry Potter!) to on-trend hair bows and black neckties. We guarantee there's something for everyone AND for every rule in the uniform book. So, roll up those sleeves and get to work!

Lucy Hale, Naya Rivera, and JoJo wear interesting takes on the classic pump silhouette.
Photo: Getty Images

Whether your dress has a bajillion strategically placed cutouts and mesh panels or you're already rocking, like, eight mismatched prints (all in the same complimentary color palette, of course—let's not get crazy), inevitably there are going to be times when your full-length mirror is screaming at you to take it down a notch on your feetsies. It's at this point when you peer into your closet, dust off those trusty solid pumps you save precisely for times like these, and slip them on with only just a twinge of sadness. Well well well, BIG NEWS, sweetheart. Take a cue from Shoe Update veteran Lucy Hale, smokin' Glee star Naya Rivera, and sultry songstress JoJo for a way to wear pumps when you need to but still keep your footwear interesting.
