'TRL' and the 2000s in a nutshell.

Today is the day! Are you ready for Total Ariana Live tonight at 7 p.m. on MTV? We definitely are. Not only is there going to be a stripped-down version of "Problem" (which I haven't been able to get out of my head all summer FYI), we'll also hear a brand new song from the pint-size powerhouse: "Break Free." What's more is that we're totally stoked about TRL coming back! (Or this ~Ariana~ version of it, at least.) You know TRL, the decade-long mainstay that invited the biggest celebrities and performers straight into your living room? Years before Belieber Fever swept the nation or 5 Seconds of Summer penned their ode to skivvies, and when Miley was living a double life as Hannah Montana.

Because we're feeling nostalgic, we gathered a collection of photos from some of our favorite style moments (most of these are from the Carson Daly years, because he's the prince of TRL).

While Justin and Britney might have pioneered the look, they weren't the only couple's matching. Jay Z and Beyonce were double-denim mirror images of each other years before they actually became a couple. Sometimes you're just on the same wavelength, you know? Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey also wore matching black tees and leather pants.

Honorable mention goes to Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daly.

As you can probably imagine, we are pretttty excited to see what everyone will wear to the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday. It is perhaps the most casual awards show out there, which leads to memorable outfits year after year. With a number of our faves like Lupita Nyong'o, Nicki Minaj, Emma Stone, and Shailene Woodley slated to appear, and Ellie Goulding and Rihanna on tap to perform, we're basically counting down the nanoseconds until the red carpet.

Because it is Movie Awards weekend, we figured we'd dedicate this week's #TBT to the 10 most memorable outfits (IMHO) of Movie Awards past. Check them out in all their glory, below.

Before Ryan Gosling was ~Ryan Gosling~, he was The Dude From The Notebook™. At the 2005 Movie Awards, Ryan decided to make a political statement, wearing a plain white tee that simply had "Darfur" printed across the front. He wore a black blazer with the shirt (hello, it's a red carpet), but ditched it when he and Rachel McAdams decided to reenact their kiss from The Notebook on stage. Rachel was dressed in bootcut jeans, pointed toe stilettos, and a strapless lace bustier, which is perhaps the most 2005-y outfit to ever exist.

Today is a magical day, one that only comes once or twice a year: a Thursday during spring break. Hello, perfect opportunity to #TBT pics from spring breaks past. As you're probably aware, MTV has been hosting spring break events for years, including performances. What you may not know, though, is that during the late '90s and early aughts, there was a show that married our two fave things—fashion and music. Spring-break editions of Fashionably Loud featured models showing off vacay fashions to live performances from the likes of Destiny's Child, Jay Z, Missy Elliott, and more. We figured we'd get in the throwback Thursday game with six of our favorite looks from Fashionably Loud, most of which were totally inappropriate for the beach. Peep 'em all below!

It seems that Fashionably Loud was full of performers wearing things one wouldn't normally pack for a beach vacation. I could be wrong, but I don't think a furry Kangol hat is the first thing anyone would put in their bag for Miami. I'm not Missy Elliott, though, so what do I know?

Wow. Just. Wow. There you have it, folks. The rumors were true. We were just graced with an *NSYNC reunion at the 2013 VMAs in celebration of Justin Timberlake's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Is everyone still breathing? (Because I barely am...) In honor of the boy man band's ceremonious return to the MTV stage with a few bars of "Gone," "Girlfriend," AND "Bye Bye Bye" (with the VERY same TV choreography from their 2000 performance, BTW), we're taking a look back at how far they've come. Sartorially speaking.

Hello, late '90s. For *NSYNC's first appearance at the Video Music Awards, the group went all out with LUSH luxury fabrics. A strong fur vest for JC Chasez (plus some bicep and knee bands), head-to-toe black leather on JT (pre-dating another Justin who frequents this look), Lance Bass in wool jewel tones (and teeny bookish spectacles), Chris Kirkpatrick in a glittering sage jacket, and Joey Fatone in a full-length evergreen pony hair jacket off-set by his FLAME red hair. Classic.

Don't be so quick to *hold a beat* walk away. We have some BIG Video Music Awards news that's gonna rock your body, world, late-August schedule, EVERYTHING. Justin Timberlake (as in THE Justin Timberlake) is performing at the 2013 VMAs in Brooklyn's Barclays Center on Sunday, August 25! Not only will JT be hitting the VMA stage for the first time in 6 years, but MTV is also doling out highest honors to Timberlake, presenting him with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. From his formative days in *NSYNC to this year's hotly anticipated (TWO PART) 20/20 Experience, from Justified to "SexyBack," Justin Timberlake's footprint on pop culture, especially in the music video space, is gigantic. SO, is there any better excuse than this to take a look back at Justin's contributions to music video fashion? (Answer: Nope.) Here are our top 10 favorite Justin Timberlake music video wardrobes of ALL-TIME. In GIFs!

Back in 1997, a little 5-man singing group called *NSYNC dropped their eponymously titled debut album. On that record was a track (#8, if we're getting really specific) called "I Want You Back." (P.S. If you don't get goosebumps during the boys' first staggered chord, you should probably close out of this browser tab now because this is not the post for you.) It was the group's first official single, and our music video introduction to Justin Timberlake. And what an intro it was. Single Sinbad earring, ripstop nylon jackets (like all the boys at school used to wear), an evident appreciation for over-sized sporty separates, and yea, the baby blues didn't hurt either.

After *NSYNC, JT embarked on what has become a colossally successful crossover solo career. One of our favorite songs and music videos from his premier reinvention stage is now and will forever be "Cry Me A River," a Timbaland-produced kiss-off track inspired by the end of his relationship with Britney Spears. It was moody, somber, but still a little bit vengeful, and accordingly, Justin was clad in all black and soaking wet from rain. The static shots with his hood up are THE BEST.

No celebrity wedding of this generation has broken hearts quite as loudly and across the board as the matrimonial union of Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. Timberlake, the heart-throb frontman of international phenomenon *NSYNC, and Biel, the definition of The Girl Next-Door: beautiful, smart, talented, and athletic. They're the kind of couple that, on paper, makes you FURIOUS, but in the wild, they're extremely cognizant and tone down the PDA for your benefit. Your heart can't help but defrost a little because they're soooo dadgum adorable.

After hearing rumors that Biel wore a pink dress for the ceremony, People Magazine has finally confirmed, putting the newlyweds on the cover of their latest issue. A pink wedding dress is a ballsy move, one we haven't seen since our spirit animal Gwen Stefani tied the knot with Gavin Rossdale. And even though our hearts are still aching, it's hard to mourn JT being off the market when you're too busy applauding his wife's indubitable badassery.

One Direction

One Direction will perform at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards.
Photo: MTV

It seems like just yesterday we were sliding and diving into Internet wormholes to figure out who these dapper little gents we kinda sorta remembered from the British X Factor were. Now One Direction is a household name (as are the individual boys). This latest iteration in boy bands is now a smash success, and we are SO excited to have them not only attending the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards as nominees but PERFORMING in all their blazer-wearing, besuspendered, GIF-worthy glory. *faints abruptly but is caught by Harry Styles hologram*

Boy bands have a long and storied history with the VMAs, and while we may have already done an exteeeeensive recap of boy band style from The Jackson 5 to the British-Irish lads of 1D, we felt this an appropriate time to delve into the specifics of VMA performance outfits. Think of the OG write-up as your survey class. Welcome to the 200-level courses. We're rolling up our sleeves and digging into the VMA stage togs of New Edition, Boyz II Men, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and The Jonas Brothers. LEGGO!

One Direction

If you don't already know the names of these smiley eyed boys by heart, break out the flashcards and get cramming. The dapper little gents before you (Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and *SIGH* Harry Styles) make up the latest batch of heartbreakers flying up on teen girls' bedroom walls across the country. They're British-Irish boy band One Direction (for a free download GO TO HERE)! They've been making waves across the pond for the past few months, but their album "Up All Night" just dropped stateside last week and is already making history as they're the first UK group to EVER debut their debut album at No. 1 on the American charts. Watch out Bieber. *wink*

Along with their silky smooth pipes and baby soft faces, these boys have some seeeerious style game. Their color-coordination is airtight with nary a single shade off or clashing. The smart tailoring, tippy-top buttoned shirts, nautical stripes, and skinny lapel blazers (with pocket squares!!) galore are just soooo English gentleman that we (along with much of the ladybaby population) can hardly contain ourselves. EGAD, these boys are KA-YOOT!!!! And notably, repping a squeaky clean yet also fashion-forward look we haven't seen in boy band steez for quite a long time. In honor of One Direction, the major milestones the group is hitting (soon to perform at the Kids' Choice Awards and SNL!), and their on-point collective style, we're taking a look back at how the boy band look has evolved over time. Walk with us.

I love these two as a couple. What a festive way to celebrate two important events in their life. Mariah looks like a dream.
