Harmony Korine, the auteur behind Spring Breakers and Kids, directed Dior's latest fragrance ad. The commercial features a model wandering around a decked-out mansion before stumbling across a secret garden where a heavily remixed version of Die Antwoord's "Enter the Ninja" drops in. The last time Korine was tapped to direct a fashion film was 2011, for Proenza Schouler. It was widely panned.

Korine's films tackle issues like poverty, mental illness, and dysfunctional families. He isn't a traditional filmmaker: His work is non-linear, experimental, and surrealist with elements of Vaudevillian minstrelsy, dark humor, and absurdism. In other words, he's never been one for mainstreamers, so it's interesting to see him so restrained. In honor of Harmony Korine, here's a roundup of other outlandish fashion films. This one's for the weirdos. Mazel.

JULIETTE LEWIS & DAFT PUNK X GAP

Let's start off simple. In 2001, when the only songs by French robotic duo Daft Punk on your radar was the house favorite "One More Time" or the meme bait "Harder Better Faster Stronger", they were tapped by Gap along with Juliette Lewis to shill jeans. Oh 2001, what a year to be alive.

Bowie's done it. Little Richard's done it. Kurt Cobain, too. Glam rock was essentially built on dudes pushing boundaries in clothing, hairstyles, and yes, even makeup more typical of the female set, and that, in turn, influenced other genres like shock rock, hair metal, new romanticism, and goth, to name a few. Gender-bending style has long been the provenance of rock and rollers, played mostly for either laughs or simply to shock the normies, but these days, you're slightly more likely to see a rapper in womenswear.

Rap, much like heavy metal, is a historically hyper-masculine genre of music, so it's refreshing to see men in the hip-hop industry wear clothing that isn't gender-specific simply because (a) they like it and (b) do you really need another reason? Let's take a look at our favorite MCs bucking conventional clothing stereotypes.

JAY Z

Jay Z was spotted in a Rodarte jersey in New York while hanging out with the Queen Bey herself. Fairly innocuous right? It looks just like a football jersey, but it's from a line best known for its ability to blend esoteric themes of "prettiness" with unconventional subject matters like Japanese horror movies (see: the Fall 2008 collection). As it stands, you can purchase it on Shopbop for $405. You could have worse role models than the Jigga Man.

rodarte

A few looks from Rodarte's Fall 2014 collection.

The Force is strong with this one. "This one" meaning Rodarte's Fall 2014 collection (obviously). Yesterday, the Sisters Mulleavy sent their latest line down the runway, which featured a few VERY familiar faces—and we're not talking about the models. With the blessing of director George Lucas, his wife Mellody Hobson, and Disney (who recently acquired the rights to Lucas' Lucasfilm Limited production company) Rodarte presented a series of Star Wars-themed looks that were both very literal (i.e. gowns emblazoned with Yoda, Luke Skywalker, and C-3PO) and creatively interpretative.

Before the beloved character-print dresses closed out the show (sans noticeably absent leads like Princess Leia and Darth Vader), Rodarte duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy delivered a collection filled with what we believe were more-discreet references to the cult-classic trilogy—which, to the average ogler, might seem totally a bit random, but have been several years in the making, as George Lucas took a highly coveted front row seat at Rodarte's Winter 2012 show. We consulted our resident Star Wars fangirl, Lauren Reid, for some much-needed insight on the collection's less-obvious nods to the films.

courtney love vanity fair

Courtney Love belts out a ballad about Etsy.
Photo: Vanity Fair

FLASHBACK: At the 1995 VMAs, Courtney Love, the hard-rocking, hard-talking front woman of Hole, chucked her MAC makeup compact at Madonna during an interview with Kurt Loder. #Can’tBeTamed. Now, after nearly 25 years as the most unfiltered female in rock and roll, Love is a lot less concerned with crashing conversations and has turned her focus toward fashion.

Since serving as a dutiful muse to Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane, Love’s officially ready to kick her Never The Bride label (which debuted in 2011) into full gear. Ladies of the ‘90s, REV. YOUR. ENGINES! In fact, the OG of grunge chic apparently has plans to give Rodarte a run for their money. SCURRT! Yup. It’s like that.

Coming off the end of a U.S. tour, Love, who’s also releasing a memoir and heading back to Hollywood, recently phoned it in to Vanity Fair to talk about plans for her Victorian rebel collection, the pains of being popular and her six-figure online shopping addiction. Girl, we feel you. Not so much the six-figure stat, but binge shopping on the interwebz is most definitely a real problem. And the first step is admitting it. Here’s what we learned from the VF chat:

Dakota and Elle Fanning

OK, we already know that Dakota and Elle Fanning have some seriously opposite personal styles. So leave it to these girls to interpret the night's "Punk: Chaos to Couture" theme Rodarte in two VERY different ways. The actresses brought double the drama on the 2013 Met Gala red carpet tonight, decked out in head-to-toe creations by fellow California sister act Kate and Laura Mulleavy. Dakota went for dark and shadowy glamour in her black number with sheer panels across her stomach. That deep v-neck is MAJOR, as is the statement fingers motif along her sides. Topping off the look with a smoky cat eye, this is a sultry tip-toe into punkland that's perfect for D.

met gala 2013

Guess who's taking these celebs to the 2013 Met Gala?!
Photo: Getty Images

Considering the time of year, the prep work, and the formality of it all, it's not really that surprising that people refer to the annual Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum as the fashion world's version of prom. While both events have a theme (we hear this year's, "Punk: Chaos to Couture," is, uh, causing attendees some wardrobe struggles), let's be real— the high concentration of really talented, really famous, and really good looking people walking those Met steps on Monday night ensures that you won't get THIS party confused with your average school dance. We already told you about how you can get in on the action from home, whether it's buying "Chaos and Couture"-inspired clothing or splurging on the celebs' dresses themselves, but what we really want to know is, who's taking who?! There might not be adorable promposals this time around, but many of the designers HAVE picked their celebrity dates for the night. Not surprisingly, Dior is bringing the brand's new face and recently crowned Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence to the fete.

Katy Perry performing at the Kids Inaugural Concert, and then at the inauguration ceremony.
Photo: Getty

We're so into the way Katy Perry stans for President Obama. There are many celebs who will ride for our newly sworn-in Commander-In-Chief, but are any of them rocking custom latex ballot dresses and attending EVERY event of the inauguration? No, just Katy. Having closely followed her time on the president's campaign trail we were eagerly awaiting Katy's inaugural weekend looks, and were CRUSHED when more of them weren't easily accessible to us online. Luckily, Vogue had our back, and linked up with Katy to publish her Inauguration weekend photo diary. Not only does it let us see candid shots of her custom stars and stripes bustier (which she designed HERSELF, along with stylist extraordinaire Johnny Wujek), but also her amazing Rodarte Inauguration ceremony coat, Oscar De La Renta performance dress, Dolce & Gabbana White House After-Party CAPE, AND her custom Kimmie Kyees patriotic nails. Ah-May-Zing. The photos really do make us feel like an insider, and of course possess that signature KP humor.

Rodarte

Even if we're not quite ready to splurge on that gorgeous $2,760 brocade dress Rodarte crafted this season (womp), that doesn't mean we'll never get our Kate and Laura Mulleavy fix. After all, the girls have teamed up on affordable collections for retail giants like Target and a capsule for Opening Ceremony in the past, there's still an awesome chance to add some of their signature cool-girl designs into our own lives without hurting our wallets. Oh, and here's one more to add to the list: just last fall the sisters joined forces with Starbucks on a selection of gift cards, mugs, and tote bags based off their own runway designs. While these mass market goods definitely AREN'T the same as owning as a Rodarte original, they do mark a significant new trend happening in the fashion world...the designer-food collab.

We know Halloween hasn't even happened yet, but OMG, WHEN WILL CHRISTMAS BE HERE? *throws fake snow in the air* In July, we were so stoked when got wind of supersized retailers Target and Neiman Marcus collabing on a MEGA holiday collection, and guess what? The time has come, friends! The 50 products (created by 24 CFDA members including Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, and Brian Atwood, just to name a few) has been released today, and OHMUHGUH, we may barf in pure excitement. But hey, let's be real. There are buttloads of items to sort through, so we made it easy and picked out the top 5 things you'll need to swipe up this season. Everything will be available in both stores and online starting December 1, so you better start makin' your wishlist now!

1.) ALICE + OLIVIA BIKE

When's the last time you received a shiny new bike for Christmas? Better yet—a hot pink and green one (with a basket!) designed by Alice + Olivia? Yeah, um, never. This bad boy retails for a steep $499.99, but seeing everyone's reaction when you roll up on these wheels will be worth EVERY penny.

C.O.I's "Ballinciaga t-shirt.
Photo: Courtesy of C.O.I.

When Rodarte teamed up with Opening Ceremony last year on the label's "Radarte" collection, the capsule line- which consisted of tees and hoodies emblazoned with the cheeky play on words- sold out pretty much immediately. It may have caused us to think twice about the irony (Rodarte's intricately crafted dresses usually retail for a couple thousand dollars, so why would you pay $200 on a hoodie that doesn't even spell the designer's name right?!), but let's be real: it's undeniably cool. In fact, this clever parody of the "status item" obsession was in a way, even cooler than the originals themselves. So it should go without saying that it's not REALLY that surprising that more brands are cashing in on this "faux" fashion with snarky inversions of labels like Versace, Givenchy, and Balenciaga. But the difference this time is that unlike the Rodarte x OC collab, they're coming from streetwear retailers unaffiliated with the designer and snatched up by celebs, fashion editors and skaters alike. The line between streetwear and runway suddenly got a lot more blurry.
