Fact: you don’t dress for the Met Gala to blend in. This year alone we spotted head-to-toe sequins, Barbie doll frocks, and even textured crocodile (ahem, Rihanna)...so needless to say, anyone who’s lucky enough to score an invite tries her absolute hardest to stand out from the rest of the fashion pack. But just like any big event, there were some major trends of the night- check out the three biggest below.

DRAMATIC LIPSTICK

Camilla Belle reached glamazon status in her slinky beaded Ralph Lauren gown, but the real secret weapon to the actress’s ‘20s-inspired look? Her ultra-bold, wine-hued lipstick, which perfectly complemented her almond eyes and trademark full brows. She's not the only one who channeled Old Hollywood by pairing dark lips with shimmery metallic dresses; it's well-tread beauty territory, and we couldn't be happier. Lana Del Rey played up her music industry darling rep with her Altuzarra dress (and cape!), which strikingly offset her burgundy lipstick and swoop of black liner. But here's proof you don't have to retire your ruby red shade just yet: Jessica Alba looked to the brighter side with a cherry-tinted lipstick in her Michael Kors gown- just as dramatic, still just as gorgeous as the rest.

Like most of the fash-hungry population, we here at MTV Style just LOVE ourselves a good awards show. The sparkle of every sequin and bead, the sheen of every satin and silk—we want it all. From the red carpet to the stage to the pretaped vignettes, the starlets of tonight's 2011 Emmy Awards pulled out all the stops, and so compelled were we by the parade of scintillating beauties that we HAD TO note our top 10 dresses from the night.

LEA MICHELE

Lea Michele stunned on the red carpet in a bright red floor-length Marchesa gown. She kept things simple with natural makeup and glossy, straight hair, left down. All the better to showcase the drama of the dress's ruffled shoulder embellishments and sweeping open back.

Hollywood's leading ladies pulled out their hottest garments for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards show last night. While color (and lots of it!) was a common thread throughout the night, we also spotted stars working other fierce trends, including belted gowns, sexy slits, and smoky eyes.

BELTED BEAUTIES: Lea Michele got high marks in a low-cut silver sequined Oscar de La Renta dress, which she wore with with a skinny gold belt. Claire Danes wore a billowing floral strapless gown by Marc Jacobs. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence looked pretty in pink thanks to her wrapped and belted Oscar De La Renta number.

THIGH-HIGH SLITS: For Sofia Vergara (in neon blue Roberto Cavalli), Rosario Dawson (in sherbert yellow J. Mendel), and Jayma Mays (in soft peach Jenny Packham), their sheaths were just as important as their shoes. Each of the celeb's dress featured a slit to THERE—all the better to show off their strappy peep toes with.

FIERY FROCKS: While the Golden Globes were awash in green (remember?), the SAGs were all about red and orange. Newcomer Hailee Steinfeld looked modern and chic in a striped Prada dress. Sarah Hyland rocked a blazing waist-knotted Max Mara dress. And Mila Kunis was also on trend in a flowy Alexander McQueen strapless number.

SMOLDERING EYES: Natalie Portman, Christina Hendricks and Dianna Agron all sported their own take on the smoky eye look. Natalie kept hers soft and subtle by using brown and taupe eye shadows; Christina used traditional shadow shades of silver, gray, and slate liner; and Dianna emphasized the line around her eyes to create a cat-eye effect.

• Designer Karl Lagerfeld has aced the art of the backhanded compliment. Here's a list of his 13 best. {Fashion Indie}

• There's a company called Paperself that is in the business of creating intricate faux lashes inspired by the art of Chinese paper-cutting. So cool. So NOT wearable. {Allure}

• From blonde to blonder, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz recently dyed her pixie platinum, and we think we like it. {Us}

• Everyone has a past, and apparently comedian Amy Poehler's involved being a stock photo model. {Styleite}

• New York Ranger's hockey hottie Sean Avery stripped down to pose for Marc Jacob's "Protect the Skin You're In" campaign. No complaints here. {Coco Perez}

• And, Tarji P. Henson ALSO went sans clothes for a promo shot. The actress posed for PETA's "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign." {Us}

From belted beauties to long-sleeve frocks and over-the-top dresses, here are five trends that smacked us in the face at Sunday night's Golden Globes Awards.

LONG SLEEVE GOWNS: It was sunny in California, but that didn’t stop these actresses from rocking arm-covering sheaths on the red carpet. Both Anne Hathaway’s Giorgio Armani dress and Angelina Jolie’s Atelier Versace were studded with Swarovski crystals, while Leighton Meester's Burberry Prorsum printed gown featured ruched shoulders for a Victorian flair.

ONE SHOULDER DRESSES: Christina Hendricks (in Romona Keveza), Mila Kunis (in Vera Wang), and Julia Stiles (in a black ruffled gown), all nailed the one-shoulder look, thanks (in part) to their toned biceps and triceps.

BELTED BEAUTIES: Looking glamorous was a cinch for Sofia Vergara (in Vera Wang), and Glee girls Jenna Ushkowitz (in Rebecca Taylor) and Amber Riley (in Oliver Tolentino), who all belted their floor-length frocks.

SEQUINED SHEATHS: Carrie Underwood, Scarlett Johansson, and Olivia Wilde wore their star power on their backs in the form of super-sparkly, easy-to-spot dresses. Scarlett wore a bat-wing Elie Saab dress, Olivia wore a Marchesa ball gown, and Carrie wore a strapless Badgley Mischka number.

OMG! ENSEMBLES: On one hand, we want to applaud Helena Bonham Carter, Tilda Swinton, Jennifer Lopez, and January Jones for taking fashion risks. But on the other hand, we just don't get it. Helena wore two different color shoes with her Vivienne Westwood dress, Tilda's crisp white shirt and yellow skirt stiffen her demeanor, J. Lo should lose the sheer cloak (her Zuhair Murad dress would've looked just fine without it), and January's red hot Versace dress may have been a bit TOO hot.

Honeysuckle may be the cool new hue for 2011, but pink, green, beige, blue, red, and black stole the color show (if only momentarily) at Sunday’s Golden Globes Awards. Which shade was your fave?

PRETTY IN PINK: Claire Danes, who scooped up a Golden Globe, wore a bright pink Calvin Klein halter dress, while Natalie Portman (in Viktor & Rolf), Emma Stone (in Calvin Klein), and Lea Michele (in Oscar de la Renta), chose softer shades of pink.

EMERALD CITY: It was a green scene on the red carpet with Elisabeth Moss (appropriate last name!) in a Donna Karan forest-hued strapless dress, and Catherine Zeta-Jones in Monique Lhuillier. Angelina Jolie rocked a sparkly Versace dress, while Mila Kunis picked the perfect shade of green (in a Vera Wang dress) for her skin tone.

BEIGE BEAUTIES: The beiges worn by Scarlett Johansson, Michelle Williams, Sarah Hyland, and Dianna Agron were FAR from boring. Scarlett wore a sheer/lacy Elie Saab number, while Michelle wore a daisy-covered Valentino dress. Sarah Hyland and Dianna Agron went for strapless silhouettes in Max Azria Atelier and J. Mendel, respectively.

SEA OF BLUE: Jenna Ushkowitz (in Rebecca Taylor), Mandy Moore (in a colbat single-shoulder dress), and Amy Adams (in Marchesa) stayed true in gorgeous shades of blue.

LADIES IN RED: Sofia Vergara (in Vera Wang), Christina Hendricks (in Romona Keveza), and January Jones (in Versace) sizzled—not only were their gowns red hot but they were body-con, too.

BEAUTIFUL IN BLACK: Jennifer Lawrence (in Louis Vuitton), Jayma Mays (in Alberta Ferretti), Piper Perabo (in Oscar de la Renta), and Julia Stiles (in a single-shoulder ruffled dress) stuck with the classics—it's hard to go wrong with a bold, elegant dark gown.

Our favorite part about awards shows is that we get to see dozens of hot trends on dozens of celebrities at one time. Such was the case at the 2011 Critics' Choice Movie Awards, where sheer fabric frocks carried over their dominance from 2010 and "mullet dresses" had their official coming-out party. Check out the other statement-making looks we loved.

SHEER DELIGHT: Short and sheer was the name of the game as actress Eva Mendes rocked an allover see-through Valentino number. Meanwhile, Elle Fanning's Valentino dress and Keri Hilson's black frock featured just hints of mesh.

MULLET DRESSES: It was business in the front, and party in the back for Mila Kunis in Nina Ricci, Michelle Williams in Balenciaga, and Khloe Kardashian in an animal print gown.

PEACHY KEEN: Flesh tone dresses full of embellishments, including glitter and ruffles, had a strong showing. We loved Jennifer Lawrence's L'Wren Scott pencil dress, Hailee Steinfeld's Marchesa cocktail dress and Elle Fanning's flippy Valentino dress.

STRAPLESS SWEETHEARTS: With or without jewelry, Amber Rose, Sofia Vergara, and Mandy Moore slipped into sexy collarbone-revealing gowns for the red carpet. Amber's mermaid dress and Sofia's metallic Temperley London showed off their figures, too, while Mandy's Monique Lhuillier just skimmed over her curves.

The red carpet for the Emmy Awards was full of great dresses. And or favorites of the night were all gold! (Figuratively and literally.) Our favorite has to be Heather Morris. If you didn't think she was a rising style star before, SHE IS NOW, as she turned heads in a sparkling gold column dress by Ina Soltani and a bracelet by Kwiat. Nina Dobrev dazzled in a dress by Zuhair Murad, and with something like this, it didn't age her and make her look older than her 21 years. Claire Danes looked the most comfortable and happy in her Armani Privé dress. And, while we wouldn't do a double take for Sofia Vergara's Carolina Herrera gown if it were on the rack, on her, it looked great, and we can imagine many prom dress designers knocking this one off next spring.

+ Who had the best gold dress — Heather, Nina, Claire, or Sofia?
