Style has moved! come with us to mtv news »

We already know what you're thinking: "Swimsuits...with sleeves?" But trust us when we say it's really not as crazy as it sounds. Surfers are already super familiar with long-sleeved suits (or rash guards, as they call them) to prevent any friction from the board when it's too hot to wear a full wetsuit, and this year, they are making their way into the mainstream market (see: us normies who can't ride the waves) as a fresh silhouette to try at the beach this summer. Plus, these suits are a great solution for those who burn easily that refuse to do the ol' T-shirt-in-the-pool situation. (We don't blame you.) So, are you convinced yet? Here's 12 ways you can sport the long-sleeved swimsuit trend this summer.

Long sleeve swimsuits

Just because the cut is sporty doesn't mean it can't be pretty! We're obsessed with this watercolor pastel-print shirt by Insight ($93) (which you can pair with practically any black bottoms), this purple floral one-piece from Free People ($148), and this seafoam mixed print O'Neill onesie ($65).

If you can't quite get on board with being fully covered all day long, a cutout mesh swimsuit offers the best of both worlds. Michi makes a "shocking blue epic bodysuit" (seriously, it's called that) with splashes of mesh in all the right places ($325). But if you're willing to show more skin, Minimale Animale's barely-there sheer rash guard ($185) or Skye & Staghorn's graphic top might do the trick ($130).

If you really want to make a statement poolside, we highly suggest these eye-catching graphic long-sleeve pieces. Our favorite bold look definitely has to be this faux-bustier print patchwork number by Seea ($143) (seriously, can we just wear this IRL?), but we also love this mod black, white and coral Trina Turk two-piece ($72) and this futuristic '80s-inspired-grid rash guard by Suboo ($118).

Ah, we love any reason to color-block, and lucky for us, long-sleeved suits lend themselves beautifully to this trend. For just a touch of brightness, try Seea's neon sleeve rash guard ($68), and for full-on color, go for Roxy's cropped teal top ($48) or Cynthia Rowley's muted jewel-tone wetsuit ($210).

Rihanna in vintage Chanel.
Photo: @badgalriri Instagram

The first thing people always ask after you go shark diving is, "Well, what did you wear?" Rihanna's response, obviously, would be "Vintage Chanel." Rih is currently in South Africa AfRIHca wearing designer duds and hanging out with a lot of animals. In the past three days she's posted pics with a lion cub, a giraffe, a "G'd up" crab, and a penguin. She also appears to have a professional photographer with her, which leads us to believe Rih is either planning a children's book or a holiday coffee table book: She X Animalz (our suggested title for either and/or both).

Since a trip to an aquarium and zoo is the perfect setting for an Rihanna-approved fashion shoot (where isn't though, amirite?), Rih has been wearing designer threads to hang out with her new, non-human friends. Awkward sidebar: she and a penguin both showed up in Givenchy and Miu Miu. After that embarrassing experience, Rih wasn't gonna mess with anything current to swim with sharks. She needed to go vintage.

OK, fine. It's not officially summer yet, but judging by the fact that I'm already sporting a sweatstache and have the A/C in my apartment on full blast, it's as good a time as any to really start talking about swimwear. Now, before you look down at your pale legs and begin weeping uncontrollably, rest assured that it's just a matter of time before you're sporting a gorgeous glow for all to see— which, of course, means the reappearance of those inevitable tan lines. Here's the deal, though: there are a LOT of cute swimsuits out there, and these days designers aren't afraid to get a little crazy with cut-outs, straps, buckles, holes, laser-cutting, basically anything. This means after a day at the beach, you run the risk of going home with some unfortunate leopard-spotted skin. In lieu of that, I rounded up the cutest swimsuits that'll leave you with some seriously questionable tan lines—consider this post part PSA/part swimsuit market for badass beach babes. I mean, I can say with utter confidence that if you turned up to a pool party in any one of these suits, you'd certainly be making a statement.

Swimsuit Tan Lines

It seems the key to the worst tan lines begins with one-pieces. Chromat designed a seriously strap-happy, metal-inspired number that, yes, features a pentagram on the chest. Just the THOUGHT of derobing in this thing while it's wet feels like the work of the devil; but then again, you did buy a swimsuit with a pentagram on it. Beach Riot also makes a killer swimsuit that, from the front, looks like any ol' one-piece with angry black panthers. Tut from the back, this little number also displays some seriously intricate latticework. I mean, a suit this cool makes those weird tan lines totally worth it.

crazy cat bikini

Would you wear this crazy cat bikini?

Fellow East Coast dwellers might have a hard time believing this, but summer is, in fact, on its way. It's a slow crawl for those of us along the Atlantic, but *shrugs* we'll wait it out. In the meantime, though, we're combing the interwebz for SWIMWEAR! Hey, it's slightly more "productive" than binge-watching throwback episodes of Arrested Development, right? Amidst our hunt, hoarding all our links and wants in our Svpply profiles, we happened upon this little string number. Sold separately, these pieces are aptly titled "Crazy Cat Triangle Top" and "Crazy Cat String Bottom," and are definitely one way to turn heads at the beach/lake/pool this summer.

Welp, if that picture above wasn't enough to stop you dead in your tracks, I don't know what will. You're staring at three lovely style bloggers, one of which may look a wee bit familiar to y'all. In the center is Gabi Gregg, the former MTV TJ and MTV Style contributor, who happens to run an incredibly successful fashion blog, GabiFresh. When she's not showing off her 'dorbs daily ensembles, she's working as a columnist for InStyle or discussing body image and bikinis on the Today show (NBD). Somehow between all that, she still found time to create her first-ever plus size swimsuit collection (that she announced in late April), which is officially available to purchase starting today. Eeee! Her five-piece swimsuitsforall line features everything from neon bikinis to galaxy print coverups, and I'm OB-SESSED. Obviously I needed to get the low-down on Gabi's entire collection, so I hit her up to give me ALL the deets behind her pieces including, yes, that amazing Spring Breakers-inspired lookbook shoot. Check out the full interview below!

Selena Gomez Dream Out Loud

Happy July, y'all! Whether you've already gotten a head-start on your Independence Day festivities or you're about to embark on your star-spangled holiday soon, let Selena Gomez and her summer-ready snapshots be a style inspiration to us all. The screen starlette turned pop star turned celebrity designer modeled a nautical striped swimsuit and a pair of heart-shaped tortoiseshell sunnies from her summer Dream Out Loud collection for KMart. The sun-kissed look was perfectly complemented by her newly auburn ombre hair and minimal makeup. But her sartorial side project isn't the only thing Selena shared this weekend! *rubs hands together menacingly*

Rihanna Swimsuit Vacation Fashion

Whether Rihanna's all layered up on the brisk streets of NYC or showing some serious leg in London, RiRi always manages to pull out some serious style game no matter WHAT the weather throws her way. Case and point: Last night she posted pics from her Hawaii vacation back in January, and oh my gahhhh—even her beachwear is amazing! We had an extremely difficult time picking our favorite looks from her vacay album because she manages to make even a barely-there bikini look fashion-y! She also kept her beauty game to a minimum by letting her (once brown) curls run wild and, dudes, we have to warn you—seeing RiRi without makeup MIGHT make your heart explode. She's straight-up stunning without a lick of foundation on, and it kind of makes us sad that we'll never be as pretty as her. :( *wipes tears from eyes* Anyway, let's check out these beach ensembles, shall we?

Iggy Azalea Complex

It's hard to forget Australian rapper Iggy Azalea. One glance at her waist-long blonde hair, bold red lips and fierce cat-eye, and her badass vixen look will forever be ingrained in your memory. For Complex's 10th anniversary issue (featuring the amazeball duel covers with Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber), Iggy opened up about her super sexualized style (see: her "My World" music video), all while showing off her stellar bod in some RIDIC swimsuits. In her first look, she sports a plunging (like, past the belly button plunging) gold Ashley Paige one-piece with super high-cut sides paired with a Luv Aj gold chain necklace. If you can tear your eyes away from everything that's happening here, you'll notice her matching gold eye shadow, thick liquid liner, and bold red matte lips. She pulled her hair back into her signature high ponytail and let her curves do all the talking. You'd think guys would be lining up to get Iggy's number, but she says, "I don’t have people asking for my number every day or even every week. I often meet people in working environments where it's professional." Welp, I think this means there's officially no hope for the rest of us.

nicki minaj pink bikini starships

Who is the queen of hyper-color hair? Easy, Nicki Minaj, of course! Willing to go the extra mile (light-year?) on the red carpet, in music videos, for performances, and at awards shows, Miss Minaj always goes for it where both her hair and whimsical ensembles are concerned. In the last few months alone, she's gone bright pink and curly for Allure (not to mention rag-doll Marie Antoinette in the fashion department), leprechaun green for Paper, and switched from a purple to a neon green wig all during the same NBA All-Star performance. Gurl loves to switch up her hair game, and for that we bow to her. But what's this latest hurrr-incarnation? Miss M was photographed on a Hawaiian beach in looooong, flat-ironed neon green hair AND a hot pink bikini. What's going on here?

I love these two as a couple. What a festive way to celebrate two important events in their life. Mariah looks like a dream.
