We've already discussed beauty trends from New York Fashion Week, so now we need to discuss the other major player on runways that isn't, y'know, clothing: HAIR! After looking at basically every Fashion Week picture that exists, we decided the number one trend that ruled the runways, hair-wise, was braids. There were braids everywhere. Some people may think braids are reserved for warmer seasons like spring or summer, but those people would be wrong. Fall/Winter braids are obviously becoming a ~thing~, so you better make sure your fingers are nimble come September. Check out braids from NYFW below!

BRAIDED BANGS

Braided bangs, a somewhat underused plait in the braid world of which I'm queen, showed up twice on runways. The first was at Creatures of the Wind, where the braid practically covered the model's entire forehead, and the second was at Nanette Lepore where it was thinner and sleeker. You don't need actual bangs to get yourself some braided bangs—just comb some of your hair forward and voilà.

Yeah, yeah, we know New York Fashion Week is officially over, but we needed a FULL weekend of recovery before we dove in and picked out the top nail art looks from all the shows—and it also happens to be Manicure Monday. (How perfect!) We have to admit, though, that this year we definitely saw designs of a whole different variety. Sure, we peeped some straight-up half moon manis (Peter Som!) and glitter gradients (Nicole Miller!), but overall we were incredibly impressed with how much designers were willing to experiment with their tips. From mechanical 3D nails to purposely-imperfect manis, we found 10 shows that totally took nail art to the next level. Check 'em out below!

OK, this image alone speaks volumes about the diversity of nail designs The Blonds had in just ONE NYFW show. Their Tweety Bird-inspired collection certainly included some on-theme bright yellow designs, but they also incorporated clear acrylics and—get this—a mechanical accent nail that came with a clear hinged door (top right). UH HUH, you can thank CND for that lovely creation.

Angela Simmons, Alexa Chung, Theophilus London, and Olivia Palermo at New York Fashion Week.
Photo: Getty Images

And we're off! New York Fashion Week has officially begun, which means we'll be spotting tons of celebs in the front row AND around Lincoln Center. We're only one day in, and we've already peeped some crazy-cool ensembles on Angela Simmons, Alexa Chung, Theophilus London, and Olivia Palermo. Angela stopped by the BCBG Max Azria fall 2012 show in a long sleeve, leather panel black dress with an insane gold plated Giuseppe Zanotti choker body piece and pony wedges. She added a pop of color to her ensemble with a bright crimson lip and bold seafoam green nails. Is it just us, or are you getting a serious Matrix vibe from Ms. Simmons' slicked-back hair look? We likey! Alexa Chung sat front row at the Honor show in a winter-ready double breasted peacoat ensemble. She paired a thick blue cable knit sweater with a black skater skirt, opaque tights, and snakeskin heels. She looked totally comfy-cool with her minimal makeup and no-nonsense hair.

Solange Knowles

Our sartorial saliva is in drool overdrive, and we're blaming Solange Knowles. Bey's baby sister is blogging her daily outfit over at British Vogue for the ENTIRE month of February, and we already can't get enough of her enviable wardrobe. For her debut outfit (posted yesterday), she showed off a lightning blue oversized (duh) T By Alexander Wang sweater paired with Guess by Marciano leather fit-like-a-glove pants, major BCBG pumps, to-die-for Linda Farrow sunnies, and a hot pink CC Skye clutch, for which Solange perfectly explains: "Yes, I support daytime clutch-wearing!" So, what's the special occasion for the head-turning getup? Oh, just a casual studio visit. NBD. Also, can we talk about her giving serious face under that umbrella (ella, ella)? I mean, I guess we're not THAT surprised, considering she was signed to Next Model earlier this month. Get ittt.

Fashion Bloggers Winter Scarves

If there's one super simple (and adorable) way to beat the cold this winter, it's with a ginormous scarf. An oversized knit can instantly transform any outfit in a snap, and even Mom will approve of this trend because it's sosososo warm! We love how scarves completely changed these girls' outfits from just plain cool to incredibly eye-popping ensembles. It's seriously amazing what one piece of thick fabric can do, so take note! Buy a long knit in a bold color, drape it over a solid coat or sweater, and voilà! You'll look street smart AND street chic.

The 2011 BET Awards BROUGHT IT in terms of the top summer trends crossing the green carpet. We spotted four must-try looks (harem pants, treated/printed denim, leather, and super girly summer dresses) on some of our faves, but we had one hell of a hard time choosing a winner for each. Luckily, we have YOU. We've paired up each celeb in a killer style showdown, and a winner MUST be chosen. So, if you have a favorite look for each trend, SPILL IT IN THE COMMENTS!

WHO WORE PLEATED HAREM PANTS BEST: ALICIA KEYS OR KERI HILSON?

Singers Alicia Keys and Keri Hilson both rocked pleated black harem pants, but each lady individualized her look with to-die-for accessories. Alicia's black and white Dolce & Gabbana ensemble oozed simple and chic, but she added a touch of fun with zebra print Christian Louboutin pumps, suspenders, and a spiraling fishtail braid. Keri accented her royal purple and black strapless Tibi jumpsuit with a bold emerald green pendant necklace, GIANT cuffs, and open-toed shoes. Who do you think won this fashion face-off?

WHO ROCKED DENIM BETTER: JUSTIN BIEBER OR JADEN SMITH?

The boys looked SO COOL rocking fun and interesting denim on the green carpet! We loved Justin Bieber's '80s throwback acid-wash jean vest paired with a black tee and metallic silver jeans with some seriously detailed stitching. He accessorized with a multicolored handkerchief, skull necklace, tortoiseshell sunglasses, a large watch, bracelets, and high-top polka dot sneakers. Jaden Smith went the more colorful route in a personalized red and orange leather "JS" MCM letterman jacket, graphic tee, and (the best part, obvi) tiger printed jeans. Not only do we feel like we NEED animal print jeans immediately, but we sort of love the high-tops he paired with his tiger stripes even more.

While there are definitely negatives to trotting around in heels all the time (blisters, tumbles, late-night foot cramps, the paranoid suspicion that blood is pooling in your toe box from standing in a pair for too long...), it's safe to say that just about every girl loves the look and feel of putting on a pair of heels. They perk up the posture and make your feet look tiny and unobtrusive (AS FEET SHOULD BE. JK. We are feminists who love big feet!). And the leg elongation is the best. That's why we let the love-hate relaysh (that's short for "relationship") go on. PLUS, there are so many kinds of heels (even ones that are, dare I say, comfortable) that we could never swear them off entirely. In this week's Shoe Update, the sweet model-turned-actress Brooklyn Decker, divalicious songstress Jennifer Hudson, and always bubbly Blake Lively demonstrate the full range of heel sizes and shapes.

Jennifer Lopez at Best Buy in L.A. on April 19.
Photo: WENN

Oh man, you know what I love about Jennifer Lopez? It has nothing to do with the fact that she was named People's Most Beautiful Woman, or whatever, because SURE. It also has nothing to do with the fact that she is a judge on "American Idol" even if I love this guy's coverage of it SO MUCH. It's the fact that here she is, lamping at a Best Buy, promoting her album wearing a Christian Cota BANDEAU, black Tibi pants and a gray TopShop slouchy blazery cardigan thing. Now, despite it not being our strong suit, let's go ahead and do some math. This woman is 41 years old. She had TWINS. That is TWO babies. TWO. Relatively simultaneously. She housed human sentience IN STEREO. And yet, her 100 percent empirically incredible genes and countless crunches means that she can look like this.

Bonus? The fact that this chick, again, because she's Jennifer Lopez, looks totally DIGNIFIED in a tummy top because her cropped, pleated trousers are tailored to fit her beautifully while showing the slight sheen of truly marvelous suiting fabric. And her asymmetrical jacket looks gloriously deconstructed in a way that whispers to either Japanese or Belgian origins. BUT that's not even true since her gray thingie is high street and just looks designer. I guess that's what it's like to be Jennifer Lopez these days. You can work a three-fer pack of nothing cotton tees like it's Jil Sander by virtue of oozing regal-assness like it's no big deal. It's like rubbing a dollar bill on her will turn it into a fiver. Magic. If she ever figures out how to bottle the secret, I'd buy it. Unless, it's like a million dollars and only for millionairesses. Or if the accompanying infomercial isn't up to the caliber of incredibleness that I know in my heart she is capable of. <3 You JENNAY. Nicely done.

Vanessa Hudgens at the Marchesa, Anna Sui, Jeremy Scott, and Yigal Azrouël Fall 2011 Fashion Week Shows in New York on Feb. 16

If there's one celeb that's DOING IT UP during New York Fashion Week, it's Vanessa Hudgens. On Feb. 16, the actress was spotted at Marchesa in a red ruffled shift, at Anna Sui in patterned bell-bottoms, at Jeremy Scott in a fitted black minidress, AND at Yigal Azrouël in a slate cocktail dress. Oh, but that's not all! On Feb. 14 and 15, the High School Musical alum was seated front row at Tibi in a glittery blazer, at Diesel in a maroon leather minidress, at Marc Jacobs in an oversize blush blazer, and at Alice + Olivia in black tights and a sleeveless tunic. Looks like there's no rest for the weary during Fashion Week. But kudos to Vanessa for making sleep deprivation look so good.

Lincoln Center in New York City was a bustling hub yesterday during New York Fall 2011 Fashion Week, where some of our fave designers (Tibi, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Hervé Léger, Rodarte, Vera Wang, and Badgley Mischka) were showing off their wares.

BADGLEY MISCHKA: All-out glamour was the name of the game at Badgley Mischka, where models (with 1950s style rolled hair) stepped out in crystal-studded tops, red carpet-worthy gowns and opulent knits.

VERA WANG: For us, Vera Wang's Fall 2011 collection read ballerina-meets-punk rock, and we loved every bit of it. The fashion-forward line included tons of pleated chiffon dresses of the floaty and fur-trimmed anoraks, which were teamed with a rugged/futuristic makeup look.

TIBI: While Tibi's fall collection may have been minimalistic with a slight industrial feel, it was still completely girly. Just check out the ruffles, sheer shoulders, and short-short sillhouettes!

MARC BY MARC JACOBS: With a runway done up to look like a school gymnasium, Mr. Jacob's Fall 2011 fashion show seemed to be an ode to his high school days in the late '70s and early '80s (not to date him, or anything!). Models stomped down the runway in adorable print dresses, blazers, short-shorts, and metallic skirts. Too cute for school!

HERVÉ LÉGER BY MAX AZRIA: Hervé Léger by Maz Azria amped up the iconic bandage dress for Fall with slick silver and gold hardware, giving the supersexy shifts a tough-girl edge.

RODARTE: Often, Rodarte's threads only work if you're in a magazine spread, walking the runway, or in a movie called Black Swan. But the design duo's fall collection, full of long dresses, lace and linen blouses, and funky patterned shifts, is completely wearable. P.S. We also adore the side twist hairstyle the models wore.
