Wow. In case you hadn't heard, Usher is going to perform at the 2014 VMAs. We've been thinking about Usher a lot lately, anyway. First of all, there's the "Good Kisser" remix by Disclosure. There's also the collab between Usher, Pharrell, and Nicki Minaj ("She Came to Give It To You") that already seems to be a floor burner. (Seriously, it's so catchy). But the one thing we really can't get out of our minds? That hat Usher keeps wearing.

He's been taking a page out of the Pharrell playbook by resurfacing vintage headgear. And while Ush may have had his raccoon cap since February, he’s been getting some serious mileage out of it. He’s been spotted in the cap while doing press to promote season six of The Voice, during a late night appearance with Jimmy Fallon, and, most recently, at the BET Awards. Where Usher goes, the hat goes. But does that mean it'll make the trip to Inglewood in August?

Perhaps by now you've realized that we, the loyal attendants of the MTV Style brain trust, prepare for prom like most prepare for Christmas. Over the past few weeks, we've made it our goal to present you with a carefully curated guide to this one night, THE ultimate high school soiree. However, we feel there are certain parameters we need to discuss. Movies set ridic standards for prom by packing drama, hi-jinx, and MAJOR sartorial showmanship, but there is one aspect of fictional proms that seems slightly overlooked: the entertainment. Have you ever noticed how certain movies feature a prom band that is just a little too famous to be believable? I mean, not to dock the history teacher who moonlighted as a DJ at MY prom, but let's face it, most prom committees just don't have these kind of connections. Let's break it down.

She’s All That is an insta-classic for several reasons, one of them being the legendary non-sequitur dance scene that takes place at the prom. Usher just so happens to be the "Campus DJ" [Ed Note: a campus which includes LIL KIM amongst its student body, BTW] who, pristinely outfitted in a tux and bowler hat, leads the entire senior class in an impeccably choreographed dance to Fatboy Slim’s iconic big-beat jam, “The Rockafeller Skank." Because we all know that practicing dance routines is exactly what high school students do in their free time. The dance number has ZERO plot-thickening merits, but there is something very satisfying about watching the same R&B superstar who sings “Nice & Slow” preside over a Bob Fosse-inspired skank routine.

Usher, Kid Cudi, ScHoolboy Q

If 2013 SXSW is any indication, the bucket hat will be even bigger this spring and summer.
Photo: Getty Images/Supreme

It's difficult to pinpoint when and who exactly started the late '80s/'90s bucket hat trend. Was it LL Cool J circa "Going Back to Cali" or Nickelodeon's Salute Your Shorts? Thanks (or no thanks) to sparse documentation of that initial rise of the fisherman's chapeau, the world may never know. One thing is for sure, though: the hat with the 360 brim is experiencing a major present-day comeback, and nothing has made that more abundantly clear than the stages of this year's SXSW music festival. Bucket hats of all shapes and sizes made their way onto last week's Austin stages by way of Usher, Kid Cudi, ScHoolboy Q (of COURSE), Joey Bada$$, IamSu, ScHoolboy Q again, Smoke DZA, and Prince SAMO.

Usher Fashion's Night Out

Yesterday we lost our MINDS over the first official Fashion's Night Out PSA with Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, but today we were hit with the mother lode. Like, we're not even kidding—everyone from Usher to Solange Knowles to Karlie Kloss to Hailee Steinfeld join in on this 2 minute video to talk FASHUN while Glee's Darren Criss sings Madonna's "Dress You Up" in the background during the entire thing. YEAH. Of course all the models/musicians/celebs donned the official FNO T-shirt (which donates a percentage of its funds to the New York City AIDS Fund) and talked about how FNO is back and better than EVER.

Usher Nail Art

Summer's biggest trend is undoubtedly nail art. From rainbow colors to crazy patterns, loud nails are everywhere. But what if you're tired of neon, glitter, or various animal prints? What if you've already done the shattered look or want to stand apart from been-there-done-that stripes 'n' polka dots? We have the perfect solution: USHER NAILS. That's right. USHER NAILS. To be more specific, Usher by way of the bold 'n' bright fashion label Jil Sander nails. Let us explain…

Oh yeah. Rub your eyes. Pinch yourself. Go ahead and double-check your calendar, but this is far from an April Fools' joke. Usher, in this very real life we're all living, wants to launch a brand spankin' (had to) new lingerie line with the bootylicious Miss Pippa Middleton. He was quoted in the Daily Star newspaper as saying, "I don't think there's a more beautiful, more stunning, more talked about woman in the world at the moment...I'm sure everybody is trying to sign her up. She won't be cheap, but she has the looks and the popularity to really establish a new product." Whoa. No playing around with Usher Raymond. The man's all business.

Justin Bieber performs on the street Aug. 20, 2007, in Stratford, Canada.

Kids these days. They grow up so fast. Just a few years ago, Justin Bieber was a virtual unknown. Now, the 17-year-old is everywhere (his hair is even on eBay!). But, l'est we forget our roots, check out a 13-year-old Biebs, clad in a LOOK-AT-ME yellow tee, tapered jeans, a baseball cap and black sneakers, street performing for money (or fame…or both). Geesh, he even had a big bottle of water with him, which meant one of two things—it was toasty on that Canadian street corner, or J.B. planned on playing for a minute. He's a hustler baby, he's a hustler. In any case, Justin has certainly come a long way. He’s got multiple hit albums, a feature film, a cute girlfriend (Selena Gomez) and an evolving wardrobe.

PERFORMING From hoodies in 2009 to popped collars in 2011, you could gauge the level of Justin's success by the prominence of his lapel.

ON THE RED CARPET Could you even imagine jeans-and-tee Bieber wearing a bow tie pre-2010? Didn't think so. But, what a difference a year makes.

AT THE VMAs Justin went from matching his shirt and shoes to the red carpet at the VMAs in 2009 to getting fancy in quintuplet-black (black tee, vest, jacket, pants, and shoes) in 2010. But we see he hasn't let go of his long pendant chains.

WITH USHER Some things never change. Usher discovered Justin Bieber (on that stoop?!?), and they've been sidekicks ever since. They even dress the same. BFFs 4eva!

The style theatrics witnessed on the red carpet at last night's 53rd Annual Grammy Awards were just the beginning. Onstage was where the real fashion drama went down. Performing stars slipped out of their fancy suits and frocks (or their green egg, in Lady Gaga's case), and into fierce performance outfits.

KATY PERRY: Love was in the air when Katy Perry hit the stage to perform. While footage of her wedding to Russell Brand played in the background, Katy, in a bejeweled Giorgio Armani tutu, belted out "Not Like the Movies." So sweet.

LADY GAGA: After teasing everyone on the red carpet by incapsulating herself in a womb/egg, Lady Gaga emerged in a Mugler by Nicola Formichetti-designed yolk-colored while performing "Born This Way."

RIHANNA AND EMINEM: We've seen this duo perform together before, and (save for Eminem's constant serious-face) they always seem to shake it up style-wise. This time, Rihanna wore a blooming yellow and black Christian Dior ball gown, while Eminem wore a black leather jacket with a hoodie and black jeans.

CEE LO GREEN AND GWYNETH PALTROW: While Gwyneth Paltrow looked rather demure (if you don't count the time she jumped on the piano and started dancing around), Cee Lo Green totally outdid himself during his performance of "Forget You." The rapper dressed as a peacock muppet. Need we say more?

JADEN SMITH, JUSTIN BIEBER, AND USHER: In the shock of the night, boy-phenom Justin Bieber walked away with zero Grammys (he's young...he still has time), but he did perk up the crowd with a medley performance of his songs. Jaden Smith (in leopard print pants) and Usher (in an electric blue getup) gave him moral support.

RIHANNA AND DRAKE: Wearing a fringed bustier set, Rihanna shook and shimmied onstage during a calypso-like rendition of "What's My Name," which she performed with Drake, who wore all black (what's up with the rappers wearing straight black onstage?).

Usher arrived at the Justin Bieber: Never Say Never premiere with his two most stylish accessories — his sons Usher Raymond V, 3, and Naviyd Ely Raymond, 2. The senior Usher wore a zip-up beige leather blazer with grey cuffs, a black V-neck tee, black jeans, gray buckle boots, silver chain necklace, athletic watch, and chrome aviator sunglasses. Usher Raymond V proudly posed with his papa in a brown leather jacket, light blue tee, distressed jeans, and burgundy sneakers, while his brother Naviyd wore a black leather jacket, blue and orange sweater, paint-splattered jeans (à la Jay-Z), and black sneakers. We can't get enough of how this tiny twosome took a huge style cue from their fashion-forward father (leather jackets + plain tees and jeans = automatic cool).

+ Do you like Usher's funky family style?
