Rooney Mara, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska on the March 2012 cover of "Vanity Fair."

There are few magazine covers that give us pause, render us speechless or, conversely, catalyze wild banshee screams the likes of which are rarely seen beyond the edges of a Scottish plateau, but the March 2012 cover of Vanity Fair has us doing all of that and more. Shot by renowned photographer Mario Testino, the cover is an ode to young Hollywood's finest actresses as well as to art deco fashion of the 1920s and '30s. Also, it's a three-page fold-out behemoth of brilliance featuring Rooney Mara, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska vamping to the lens with their best glamour doll countenances. Fold this baby out and you'll encounter lounging lovelies Elizabeth Olsen, Adepero Oduye, Shailene Woodley, Paula Patton, Lily Collins, Brit Marling, and Felicity Jones, too. Squint at all of this pastel parfait elegance for too long and your eyes will cross, your pulse will quicken, and there's the distinct possibility that the need for smelling salts will arise. You guys, this cover is so INSANELY AMAZING that we think it might be the best Hollywood cover in the history of Vanity Fair Hollywood covers, and we haven't even begun to discuss the fashion in this dream spread yet. Just *breathe*...
At first glance, your eye goes straight to the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Rooney Mara and her dark Louise Brooks makeover. Wearing a crisscross baby pink Ralph Lauren Collection halter gown, she pouts in dark plum lipstick, heavily smoked lids, and in a sleek noirish bob that only she could pull off. Although we'd hasten to put Mara in pale pink, we think stylist Jessica Diehl made a bold choice that photographed beautifully. The Hunger Games' Jennifer Lawrence is equally vampy in a champagne Donna Karan New York gown, Veronica Lake-inspired hair, and perfectly crimson rouged lips.
Both Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska have the faintest traces of lightheartedness in their visages, and we love their bold hair color. Chastain is wearing ice blue Giorgio Armani and Wasikowska's platinum mane is offset in a pale green Ralph Lauren Collection gown, feather boa, and heels. As if the 2-D wonderment of this cover wasn't enough, the fine folks over at VF.com uploaded behind-the-scenes videos with each actress (interviewed by editor Krista Smith), where it's revealed that Rooney Mara had a high school crush on Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Jennifer Lawrence had an awkward encounter with Robert De Niro, and Mia Wasikowska longs to be a photographer. Seriously, we can't WAIT to get our hands on this when it hits newsstands, ohhhh, TOMORROW.
