Soooo are masks Kanye West's new thing or is the bright red balaclava he wore to Maison Martin Margiela's Paris Haute Couture show last night just his way of trying to beat the cold? We know it's skin-crackingly frigid over here on the East Coast, but this knit face-covering seems a little extreme for the cool 34°F (not even below freezing!!!) the City of Lights caught last night. This meteorological knowledge plus Ye's recent history with masks lead us to believe only one thing: Kanye wore this cherry red ski mask in the name of FASHUN.
"Recent history with masks?" you might ask. Allow us to jump start your memory. Mr. West played a few intimate shows at Atlantic City's Revel Resort just before the dawn of the new year. On top of revealing Kim Kardashian as his "baby mama," Kanye also poured his heart into a 75-minute set and did it all while wearing two (not one, but TWO) different masks covering his entire mug — one, a crystal-encrusted Margiela design, the other, a furry (or possibly feathery?) abominable snowman situation which garnered him the short-lived nickname of Kanyeti. Take THAT, Nicki and Justin, with your half-face masks!
There's still a slight chance that this is either an homage to Russia's Pussy Riot punk collective or an indicator of Kanye's pain threshold for cold, but both are equally unlikely. What do you think of Kanye West's new mask and do you think face-coverings are his new thing? Let us know in the comments below!
