And just like that, we're officially one week into December and THAT much closer to the end of the year. While we countdown to new beginnings and fresh starts in 2013, we're recapping our favorite style moments from 2012. We're hitting all the important areas we can before our speakers start playing Auld Lang Syne. From celebrity nail art to magazine covers, Instagram selfies to facial hair and everything in between!

It's one thing for individuals to have exemplary style. (*ACHEM* If you haven't voted in our Readers' Choice: Best Dressed of 2012 poll yet, you should probably do that!) But it's another thing entirely for a band (of multiple people!) to pull off individual outfits but still look cohesive. With the epic resurgence of boy bands (thanks, One Direction and The Wanted!) and plenty of OG comeback stories, the well-dressed ensemble group was not that rare a thing this year. Thus, we bring you the best band style of 2012.

I mean, OBVIOUSLY. The dudes of 1D have become the very definition of this era of boy band style. They may coordinate like the groups of old, but their look is fresh because rather than wearing carbon copies of the same outfit five times over, they pick a color scheme and try to create unique looks around that, paying special attention to ensure variety (e.g. only one red pant, multiple red shirts are permitted if one is printed, someone MUST wear suspenders, etc.).

Tick, tock, tick, tock...hear that? It's the sound of the end of 2012 creeping closer and closer! (cue the dramatic soundtrack). But before we usher in a whole new era of style and music madness, we're NOT finished with the current one quite yet. For the next few weeks, join us on a trip down memory lane where we wax nostalgic about all the awesome things 2k12 had to offer. We've already hit mag covers, nail art, and just yesterday, Instagram selfies. Next up, let's hear it for the boys.

Unless they happen to change up their looks as much as, say, Adam Lambert or Jared Leto, it's a fact of life: we just don't talk about the beauty and grooming habits of the dude portion of the population as much as we do the ladies. But now that we're officially wrapping up the year, it's time to give the guys some cred for their killer grooming game...namely, their facial hair. 2012 has seen some WILD moments, from the failproof five o'clock shadow on Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson, to creative designs (hey, Riff Raff!) to looks that literally require a double-take (coughJaredLetocough). So we've combed through the photos over the past 365 days to bring you the boldest mustache, beard, and brow incarnations from some of our favorite boys. It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it....

Sure, he may flex his biceps and a teeny 'stache in the steamy John John Denim commercial, but this year Zac Efron was really ALL about the clean cut scruff. Kicking things off way back in February at the premiere of The Lorax, the actor offset his perfectly tousled hair with just enough stubble from swaying too far on the pretty boy spectrum. This Disney star is all grown up (but not TOO much, moms!).

We're nearing the end of 2012 (or if you follow the Mayan calendar, the end of the world), so what better way to usher in the new year (or, again, the end of time) than by reflecting on these last 365 days? At MTV Style, we're doing just that in the only way we know how: daily recaps of the BEST nail art and magazine covers and MORE as we make our way to New Year's Eve. Grab a cup of cocoa with extra marshmallows, and get a little nostalgic with us about our favorite style moments of this year.

Instagram has only been up and running for a little over two years, but the camera + filter + community app has risen to excellently-executed College Humor parody status ubiquity, and thus, a reflection on 2012 wouldn't be complete without it. Admittedly, much of the daily news lineup around here hinges on whether or not our fave celebs are Instagramming their latest outfits or beauty looks, so there's DOUBLE incentive for us to stay constantly refreshing our feeds. There are Instagrams that feature food, ones that spotlight shoe game, jealousy-inducing landscape photos (thanks a lot, Ed Droste) and enough dog and cat pics to keep Cute Overload swimming in content for the next 800 billion years, but we're gathered here today to celebrate one specific type of Instagram (no straight-up Twitpics — sorry, Miley, Demi and Gaga): the selfie.

Rihanna is basically addicted to Instagram selfies.

Kicking it off with a bang is Instagram's Most Wanted: Rihanna. By that, we mean that Miss Robyn Fenty is, in our opinion, the BIGGEST celebrity perpetrator of The Instagram Selfie. Just look at all those self-shot photos. And the looks she's willing to out-stretch an arm for run the gamut from way done-up, kissy-faced glamour shots to baroque accessory-dripping streetwear, to no-makeup vacay snaps, and with good reason. The girl is a brick house, and with over 3 million followers (and counting!) clearly nobody minds.

Yep, it's true—2012 is almost over, and, gosh, what a fashion-filled year it has been! From the breathtaking magazine covers to the oh-so-shocking haircuts to the incredible red carpet dresses, there certainly wasn't a dull fashion moment over the past 12 months. So sit back and relax as we reminisce about all our favorite style moments of 2012.

The hyper speed instant gratification of the Internet is awfully nice, but there's also something to be said for closing that laptop and cuddling up with your favorite glossy's new issue. There's the satisfaction of feeling the pages in your hands, that half paper half perfume ads fashion mag smell, that's the perfect combination of comforting and indulgent. I mean, until you get a paper cut, that is (we still work on the internet, after all). But seriously, we love fashion mags for many reasons, not least of which being their COVERS. Seeing our favorite celebs looking amazing, and often going out of their comfort zones. taking risks, and revealing new looks is something we look forward to every month. This was a big year for our fave mags AND our fave stars, which made picking our faves SO. HARD. But we did it, you guys. Just for you.

One Direction and puppies. There's really nothing more to say, this cover speaks for itself. It's like Wonderland magazine has concocted a secret love potion that should never have been secret. It's a no brainer, right? You combine perfectly coiffed young pop stars, crisp collars and soft cashmere with snuggly, squirmy little white lab pups and what do you think is going to happen besides a collective gasp-swoon-faint combination.

We're not exaggerating when we say this was THE year of nail art. Sure, 2011 had its fair share of tricked-out tips, but 2012 brought out the best nail game in everyone. So, let's start off the Best of 2012 with bang by introducing the most killing-est (that's a word) celebrity nail art from the entire year.

Katy Perry Nail Art

It's no secret that Katy Perry has a penchant for seriously-detailed digits, and with the help of go-to nail artist Kimmie Kyees, the singer has sported some of the most intricate manis we have seen to date, including (but not limited to!) metallic goth florals, Hollywood movie nails, Barack Obama tips, and the entire cast of Daria. Girl loves a good theme!

Um hi, where did 2012 go!? This year seriously flew, and needless to say, a LOT of fashion craziness has happened within the past 12 months. It wouldn't be complete without a killer countdown, so from now until the end of the year we're going to be rounding out some of our kookiest, coolest, and most memorable style moments on this site (stay tuned...). But first, we're kicking things off with the ULTIMATE question, and we're asking you guys: who were the best dressed stars of 2012?

Divvied up into dude and ladies, this all-encompassing category takes into consideration many aspects of style, from what these celebs wear on the street, to quasi-casual events, to the fancy outfits they rock when they're all dressed up. We've included our top 10 guys and girls, and it's up to YOU to decide who wins the bragging rights for #1. We've extended voting until Monday December 10th!. So what are you waiting for? Choose your best dressed after the jump!

I love these two as a couple. What a festive way to celebrate two important events in their life. Mariah looks like a dream.
