J.Crew

Can you believe it's only been a year now that fashion-forward retail giant J.Crew has been showing at New York Fashion Week? Yes, it's only been 365 days (well, roughly) since the Jenna Lyons/Mickey Drexler match-up made its Lincoln Center debut. (And though J.Crew has shown exclusively via presentation and not runway show thus far, that hasn't stopped MEGASTARS like Miss Beyonce Knowles) from showing support. And judging from the brand's marked evolution of the collections from season to season while still keeping true to the J.Crew signatures (namely excellent tailoring and a massive sucker punch of color), it's not hard to see why.

Sammi Sweetheart

These days it seems like ALL the Jersey Shore girls have been inching their way into the fashion world—JWOWW launched her Filthy Couture line back in 2010, Snooki has been KILLIN' it in the accessories department (sunglasses, flip-flops, slippers—you name it!), and now Sammi is finally making her stylish debut. The Jersey Shore girl launched her own fitness line (called The Sammi Sweetheart Collection) in conjunction with SXE Fitness at New York Fashion Week yesterday, and we were there to watch it all go down from the front row.

Alexa Chung, Abigail Breslin and Holland Roden

Reporting from day five of Fashion Week means empty red bull cans, numb fingers clacking on keyboards and strained eyes from slaving away at our computers (can a girl get some Visine please?), but we're still going strong because we love ourselves some celeb sightings, and trust us, there have been some good ones. Notably we spotted British It Girl Alexa Chung, Abigail Breslin and Teen Wolf star (and host of our 2012 VMA Red Carpet Report last week) Holland Roden, and we're just getting started.

Low slung skirts were a departure from higher, cinched waitslines of past seasons.

While we want to save the trend reporting for later in the week, there is one thing that we just have to mention: Spring 2013 is all about classic, retro shapes. That could be said for every season, as everything old is new again with each collection, there are no new trends, and so on and so forth, but there really is a distinctly time warp vibe to many of the shows that we've been to, and Marc Jacobs was no exception. His show at the armory opened with a look that was without a doubt an ode to Twiggy--a coltish blonde model with her hair pulled back, bangs pushed forward in a faux-bob, wearing an oversize white t-shirt with a black bar design (a la Black Flag) over what appear to be a pair of black bikini underwear. It's pure mod simplicity, playing the casual, so-basic-it's-high-art ease of the t-shirt alongside the bare youth of the model's legs. What followed from there were a series of striped looks that appeared straight out of London or New York in the 1960's: urbane, practical, but not without a distinct sense of fun and adventure. Boxy trench coats and suits that were just a little left of classic dominated the early part of the show in shades of black, nude, slate, with the a pop of leopard print breaking up the uniformity here and there. Models wore the skirts much lower than we've been seeing the past few seasons, with exposed hips peeking between skirts and blazers, which were worn sans shirt underneath. With clean, slim, and straight silhouettes that reminded us of the costumes that Mia Farrow wore as the title character in Roman Polanski's Rosemary's baby, suit jackets were certainly not the sexy menswear inspired looks we've been seeing on red carpets (remember Taylor Swift and Kat Graham at the VMAs?). Skirts ranged from pencil to a-line, but fell below the knees. Where's the whimsey, you ask? A skirt paired with a cropped sweatshirt emblazoned with a black and white screen print of Mickey Mouse reminded us of Azealia Banks' "212" look, and was a reason to smile amid a sea of serious fashion.

Pamela Love NYFW

Jewelry designer Pamela Love isn't one to follow the crowd, which is why we've always loved her. Unlike last season's steampunk jewelry presentation, Pamela decided to something a little more daring for this NYFW show—opening up a pop-up tattoo shop to get her designs permanently inked on your skin. She and her hubby (illustrator Matthew Jameson Nelson Love) created custom flash-sheets from which people can choose their designs. The tattoos are then applied by artists Minka Sicklinger and Patrick “Fish” King to members of the fash industry who are willing to go the extra mile in between Lincoln Center shows. So, why did she opt for something so permanent instead of her usual presentation? "Tattoos and jewelry are very similar, they are both decorative adornments for the body that often have deep meaning to the individual," Pamela said in a press release. "Jewelry is very personal, it is something that you can wear every day and after a while the pieces you wear most feel like they’ve become a part of you. Getting a tattoo is a logical extension of that idea. It’s something you can carry with you forever."

Karen Walker

There's nothing we would love to do more than time travel. We're holding out for the possibility someday (make it happen, technology) but since the day has yet to come when we have the necessary futuristic tools at the ready, we're lucky to have Karen Walker. The designer, known for her effortlessly feminine looks, took us to the fabulous 1950s (and beyond) with her Spring 2013 collection. Walker, who takes us on a different journey each season, managed to put a modern and celestial spin on the pieces while making a nostalgic nod to the past. We're still trying to wrap our brains around the amazingness of it all, and may or may not know what year we're in right now.

Asher Levine Spring 2013

Mini MTV Style history lesson: We've been obsessed with designer Asher Levine since we first chatted him up back in 2010. The then-22 year old was already designing outfits for Lady Gaga (HUGE!), and just last year he collabed with Mother Monster's fashion director Nicola Formichetti on a line of tees that sold at his pop-up shop in Soho. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, spring 2013 fashion week hit, and we found ourselves on yacht (yeah, a YACHT) with Asher himself discussing all the deets behind his latest fashion show—which, lucky for us, would include a live performance by one of our hip-hop faves, Le1f!

Lil Kim

Looks like Lil Kim's appearance at last season's The Blonds show was no brief flirtation with Fashion Week. No ma'am, Kimmy Blanco is a bonafide New York Fashion Week staple now complete with a major FASHUN anniversary performance under her belt. We're talking, of course, about Opening Ceremony's seriously epic 10 Year Anniversary party at Webster Hall last night. Kim strolled up to the party in a black bodycon dress with some serious shoulder architecture. There's some off-the-shoulder drapery happening but also a regal popped collar for the Queen Bee. A thick row of neck and arm baubles finish off the look, but you KNOW that wasn't her only outfit for the night!

It's the best kind of thicket.
