You know what they say, there's just something about California girls. Maybe it's their free spirits or just the fact that they aren't as vitamin D deficient as us cranky goths here on the east coast, but lemme tell you, it's something. Los Angeles sister-band Haim have whatever that California lady magic is in spades, and their latest video, for synth pop stunner "Falling," makes that abundantly clear. Set in LA's Angelus mountains, the video shows the three sisters (in descending age and height order: Este, Danielle, and Alana who is also known as 'Baby Haim') arriving in the forest only to shed their more prim selves in exchange for living off the land and dancing ecstatically in the firelight. Transforming from wide-eyed explorers in vintage collegiate garb (high waisted skater skirts, buttoned-up blouses a la The Virgin Suicides) into wild girls fishing with their bare hands in cut off shorts, crop tops, and printed ponchos, Haim manage to capture all of the dynamism and magic of their live show in the clip, combining the arresting visuals with the emotional, driving tempo of the song. There's also dancing, and a lot of it. We were so into the clothes in the video, which range from vintage to local LA designers, and fit both the narrative and the girls' personal styles perfectly, that we knew we had to have a chat with Los Angeles stylist Sophia DeArborne to go a little deeper.
