Lady Gaga's meat dress was by far the most outrageous fashion moment of the 2010 Video Music Awards last night. It was her third and final outfit change of the night (she wore it to accept her Moonman for Video Of The Year), and definitely the most insane. But the bigger question is — was Lady Gaga's meat dress real?

The answer is YES.

The designer behind the dress is Franc Fernandez. And when we chatted with him this morning, he told us: "The dress is indeed real meat from my family butcher. Glad it went so well." Franc Fernandez showed off how he created the look on his blog this morning, and it's a work of art. (Lady Gaga's stylist, Nicola Formichetti, was the one who styled the look.)

So why meat? It's symbolic ...

On why Lady Gaga chose a meat dress, she told Ellen DeGeneres that it was a symbolic choice: "Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth. However, it has many interpretations, but for me this evening ... If we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And I am not a piece of meat."

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards brought stars together from all corners of the music and fashion industries. The red carpet walk was a visual feast, with some stars wearing designer gowns (Ciara in Givenchy!), while others went for a more low-key look, such as Jared Leto, who rocked a leather jacket and combat boots! Herewith, our top ten favorite looks from the evening.

1. Lady Gaga In Alexander McQueen
Lady Gaga paid tribute to Alexander McQueen, the British designer who sent her clothes for her "Bad Romance" video, by wearing a gown from his fall 2010 collection. The red, green, and gold piece looked royal on Lady Gaga, and the head piece was the perfect finishing touch!

2. Lady Gaga In Giorgio Armani
Lady Gaga looked DIVINE in this voluminous black dress, which had a plunging necklace and full leather skirt. Also, check out that matching spiked black headpiece! Designer Giorgio Armani custom-created the look for the pop star, and you can get a peak at what the outfit looked like before it was made for Lady Gaga here!

3. Jared Leto In Leather And Combat Boots
We know we're not supposed to fall for bad boys, but how can we help ourselves when Jared Leto shows up in this gray leather jacket worn over black jeans and combat boots? It's pitch perfect for the recent fall weather, and we'd be happy if we could cozy up next to this guy.

Fashion is supposed to be fun. But sometimes, celebrities and musicians can take it to another level — an OUTRAGEOUS level, which is one of the best parts of the show! Check out the top 10 most outrageous outfits from last night's 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. See the list below!

1. Lady Gaga in Franc Fernandez
Lady Gaga closed the show in a MEAT dress that reminded us of artist Mark Ryden's "The Meat Show." To say the outfit was attention-grabbing would be an understatement. We couldn't stop starting at it! The pop singer sure knows how to steal the show with her sartorial choices.

2. Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time" Outfit
We thought we were experiencing déjà vu when we saw Cher come on stage in the sheer, black number! It was a total throwback to the video for her classic hit, and we applaud Cher for still being brave enough to flaunt her fab figure!

When the worlds of style and music collide at an event like the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, there is bound to be an explosion of trends and fashion statements. And tonight, the trends hit hard! The ladies loved bright blue dresses (Rosario Dawson, Miranda Cosgrove, and Snooki) and metallic shifts (hello, Audrina Patridge, Stephanie Pratt, and Lo Bosworth!). Meanwhile, the boys looked dapper in head-to-toe black (we're talking about you, Drake, Usher, and Justin Bieber). Elsewhere, we saw a TON of black-and-white outfits, like Katy Perry in Marchesa, Jersey Shore star Sammi "Sweetheart" in Bebe, and Ashley Greene in Giambattista Valli. Plus, sporty leather jackets were super popular with guys such as Justin Timberlake and Penn Badgley. And there are plenty more trends, too! To see all of the top VMA red carpet trends, click here.

Lady Gaga in Franc Fernandez and Mark Ryden's Incarnation painting.
Photo: PictureGroup

Lady Gaga's third outfit of the night at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards was by far the most ... meaty. Literally. Lady Gaga wore a meat dress, hat, shoes, and purse by designer Franc Fernandez. What was Lady Gaga trying to tell us with this outfit, the look she wore when she proclaimed her next album title on the Video Music Awards stage, "Born This Way"? That the world treats her like a piece of meat? That she's the heartiest person in the whole room? That she could care less about PETA? This meat-as-art is an interesting perspective, one that we've seen before in artist Mark Ryden's work, who painted a picture named "Incarnation" of a girl wearing a meat dress that is similar to Lady Gaga's dress. Do you see the similarity?

+ What do you think is the meaning behind Lady Gaga's meat dress?

The stars of The Hills seem to always know how to stand out among a crowd. And tonight, Stephanie Pratt, Audrina Patridge, and Lo Bosworth shined on the red carpet of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in gorgeous metallic dresses. Stephanie Pratt wore a sleeveless, floor-length, V-neck dress by Nicole Miller that was had multi-colored beading over a beige background. Meanwhile, Audrina Patridge opted for silver, silver, and MORE silver! She picked a sparkly Isaac Mizrahi mini and cinched it in with a matching Judith Leiber belt. And check out those studded Balmain heels! Gushworthy. And finally, Lo Bosworth picked a one-shoulder gold Gabriela Cadena dress and wore it with strappy black sandals. We love the way she added some glam to her look by pulling back her hair and wearing dangly earrings. But who looked best?

+ Who wore metallic best? Stephanie Pratt, Audrina Patridge, or Lo Bosworth?

One of Lady Gaga's three outfits at tonight's Video Music Awards included a voluminous black dress and matching spiked black headpiece. Well, here's the inside scoop: Designer Giorgio Armani custom-created the look for Lady Gaga's Video Music Awards appearance, and the label sent us a sketch of what the outfit looked like before it was made for Lady Gaga! Isn't it fabulous? The look is a bustier gown with a plunging neckline and a black leather long, full skirt. And her MTV Video Music Awards Moonman for Best Pop Video is definitely the perfect accessory!

Lady Gaga in Alexander McQueen, Giorgio Armani, and a meat dress.Photo: PictureGroup

Lady Gaga blew us away tonight with her THREE wardrobe changes at the 2010 Video Music Awards. First, she walked the red/white carpet wearing an outfit from the Alexander McQueen fall 2010 with matching Alexander McQueen shoes, which she also wore in her "Bad Romance" video. Then, when Lady Gaga accepted her award for Best Pop Music Video, she changed into a black dress custom-designed by Giorgio Armani. Finally, to accept her award for Video Of The Year, Lady Gaga wore a meat dress by Franc Fernandez (similar to the one she wore on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan), which left her backside bare. But which one of these Lady Gaga looks was your favorite? Ours has to be the Alexander McQueen dress. It reminded us of her "Bad Romance" video and it was absolutely breathtaking. But what do you think?
