A$AP Rocky

Yesterday morning, A$AP Rocky revealed his (NSFW) "Goldie" music video. In it, the Harlem rapper rides through the streets of Paris with the Eiffel Tower as his backdrop, lights gold laceless Margiela sneakers on fire, and stunts a lot of very, very expensive jewelry. When we caught wind that A$AP was working with Alexander Wang on the video, we immediately hit the rapper up on the "Goldie" set (the portion not filmed in the City of Lights #sadface) to talk about his video style. In our exclusive video interview, A$AP discusses meeting and working with Alexander Wang, developing the wardrobe without a designated stylist, and his thoughts on his own personal steez. Check it out after the jump!

Karl Lagerfeld Florence Welch Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld and Florence Welch at the Chanel show during Paris Fashion Week on Oct. 4.
Photo: Getty Images

To be honest I was a little apprehensive about meeting Florence Welch . There's a certain gravitas about her music because it makes me feel actual, live emotions which is suboptimal because it makes my cheeks get all flushed and pins and needles-ish. I thought when I interviewed her she'd speak in song and it would come out of her head all misty and mythological and in cursive strings of English moss because if there's anyone who's a human unicorn besides Bjork, it would be her.

If you've been keeping up with the fash-news, you'll know that Karl Lagerfeld is obsessed with her and when he's not putting his pointy Dior-Homme-shod foot directly in his non-food-eating mouth for insensitive quips about outrageously talented zaftig singers who love a smokey eye, the kaiser is a fairly reliable litmus test for who is spectacular (also see: Azealia Banks). Florence even performed at his underwater-themed Spring 2012 Paris Fashion Week for Chanel, emerging from a clam shell like Botticelli's Venus.

The rad thing about Florence is that she's hilarious. You'd suspected she might have an awesome sense of humor because she covers some truly unorthodox music brilliantly (ie: Drizzy songs) but that same sense of whimsy and charm carries to her attitude about fashion. In this interview she discusses how Karl is surprisingly tactile and easy to hug (WHUT?) and what was going through her mind during the surreal time span in which she had to wait for her cue to perform from a shell in the Grand Palais at 9 in the morning in Paris. She's tickled by the fine line between what constitutes a ladies' suit and what are just printed dude's pajamas and she loves herself a Ralph Lauren smoking slipper. All in all, she was super fun to chat with and we're stoked that on Sunday, April 8, we'll get to see a Florence and the Machine "Unplugged" performance at 11 p.m. ET on MTV and Unplugged.MTV.com. She rules. IRL, on-camera, Unplugged, basically all the time and everywhere. Check out a sneak peek of her performance as well. Do eeet.

barneys coop video girl models

From left: models wearing Sea NY, Acne, and Diane Von Furstenberg in the Barneys CO-OP Spring 2012 video.
Photo: Courtesy of Barneys New York

Typically not two words you associate with each other, "funny models" is exactly the kind of thing we're into. It's not that models aren't funny, it's just that we so rarely hear them speak (or see them smiling), and especially not for a store campaign. Barney's CO-OP isn't your typical store, though. For their new spring 2012 campaigns, they shot two videos (one for women and one for men) featuring models telling life stories while wearing looks from various spring collections. But the stories? They're HILARIOUS. We're talking stuff involving interesting/bizarre dance moves (otherwise known as Butoh, which is actually a real dance technique, and The Pancake, which we think is completely made up), as well as issues involving toes, small towns, swallowing quarters, and a model dude yelling "AHORCALA!" really passionately for no apparent reason. You guys, you need to see these videos to behold their fash-magic.

Harnesses, gorilla arms, and covered faces were big trends at Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week.
Photo:

New York Fashion Week has wrapped, so now it's a time for reflection. A time to take stock and truly think about what trends to incorporate into your new fall wardrobe. It's also a time to look at videos made whilst one is tired and strangely retaining water in one's puffy moonface against the backdrop of spliced-in photos of models looking waifish and extra cheek-boney. SERIOUSLY, do I look like this? Also, don't answer that.

So, on to the point! Here, we have created a video for you that includes the four most notable trends of the season as gauged by prevalence on the runway: loooooong, lean lengths; leather; fur; and artful collars. From Rodarte's shearling dress to Herve Leger by Max Azria's leather harnesses, to the ubiquity of a thing called "gorilla arms," here is my enormous head looming before you in hopefully a nonthreatening (at the very least) manner to spasm chat about a New York Fashion Week fall trend cheat sheet. Namaste. Or whatever.

A look from the Jeremy Scott Fall 2012 collection and designer Jeremy Scott on Feb. 15, 2012, in New York City.
Photo: Getty Images

OH MY GAWG. Well, you guys already know that we're wild Jeremy Scott Stans. Whatever douchechills that typically accompany testifying to being a massive, embarrassing fan of someone DO NOT APPLY HERE and certainly not in even the remotest neighborhood of this show BECAUSE it was that spectacular. Here's the thing, looking back on the week, I appreciated NYFW and can happily pluck out looks I adored for its cleverness or its artfulness or its elegance or its movement. But, I can also confidently say that a great many ensembles smacked of a certain, obvious commercial appeal that would be GREAT if I could cop it at ASOS but weren't all that spirit-rousing or soul-igniting marching down the runway in practical, wearable, accessible droves.

Jeremy Scott A/W 2012 could NOT be a further departure. The collection, entitled "Delete History," was inspired by the internet and was absolutely bonkers schizoid in its peripatetic prance all over sensory overload town. The collections is basically what The Lawnmower Man saw right as he hugged the information superhighway so hard with his brain that he fell in, if he also happened to be at a renegade rave in London in 1991 at the time. We caught up with the designer backstage and talked about his inspiration:

Whitney Eve Fall 2012

A look from the Whitney Eve fall 2012 collection and designer Whitney Port on Feb. 15, 2012, in New York City.
Photo: Getty Images

Whitney Eve's first solo New York Fashion Week runway show (prior events have been presentations and joints shows in Miami or in L.A.) for Fall/Winter 2012 was admirable for its restraint. Inspired by an antique kaleidoscope found in her grandmother's house, Whitney Port unveiled tailored angles and jewel tones and at no point threatened to allow her collection to fragment into scattered, disparate stories. Set to the backdrop of Beyoncé's "Run The World? (Girls)," M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls," Robyn's "Fembot," and The Big Pink's "Dominos," there were sequins, dainty peplum blouses, pretty bubble prints, fluttery blouses, cocktail dresses with geometric beading, and a cannily cut and breezy-to-wear suit.

We caught up with the flaxen-haired designer to talk about the iridescent nails (blue!), her inspiration, and some of her favorite pieces.

house of waris boo

BOO isn't just a word ghosts use when they want to frighten you; it's actually a term of endearment derived from the 18th century word "beau" and is used to describe a significant other. For jewelry designer and actor Waris Ahluwalia, the dapper don of the House of Waris, it's also the name of his latest jewelry collection. Debuting just in time for Valentine's Day, the "Boo" collection features gold necklaces, bracelets, and earrings intended to let you show your appreciation for your boo on your collarbone, wrist, or earlobes. The pieces will be available exclusively online at Moda Operandi and in-store at New York's Kirna Zabete and Miami's The Webster. Always a storyteller, be it through jeweled accessories, scarves, or in movies like The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and I Am Love, Waris asked a few of his creative friends and collaborators to produce short films entitled "You're my Boo" to go along with the launch. Lucky for us, we have an EXCLUSIVE one to show you!

Alexis Krauss Nail Art

Alexis Krauss and Ria Lopez.
Photo: MTV

It's no secret that Sleigh Bells' leading lady Alexis Krauss LOVES her nail art. When we caught up with her at the Woodies last year, she showed off some drool-worthy nail designs and quickly gave a shout-out to a girl named "Maria in Greenpoint." Um, HOLD THE PHONE. We live in Greenpoint, and we're obsessed with nail art. There's a nail genius living in our neighborhood, and we don't even know? After endless Google searches, we still ended up empty-handed, so we did what any investigative journalist would do—asked around the neighborhood. We got a tip that Alexis gets her jet-black locks done at Hair Metal in Greenpoint, so we talked fash, beauty, and, of course, Sleigh Bells with the stylists, and they pointed us to an unassuming place called Maritza's Unisex Salon on India Street—literally across the street from our apartment. Maria, who goes by Ria Lopez, sat in a lime-green, leopard-print painted corner of the salon with all her nail art on full display. Upon first glance, we knew this was our girl. We got some nail art of our own straight from Ria herself, and she's SOSOSO skilled to say the least. She confirmed that she was, in fact, the gal behind Alexis' iconic nails, so we immediately knew we had to spread the word.

Azealia Banks.
Photo: Matt Barnes

As some of you may know, hyper-cute, 20-year-old, uptown MC Azealia Banks landed a major record deal today, signing with Universal Music Group.

This is awesome, considering we've been quietly stalking her and sending a grip of positive vibes her way since she came into our offices to gossip about style. As I've rhapsodized in previous posts, I think your girl is the mazin'. Truly hilarious and basically the bee's knees and fearless in that way where you cannot believe how wicked-auspicious THIS PARTICULAR collection of traits is in one tiny, mortal person. While you can read all about the deal anywhere on the information superhighway except for...ummmm...Wikipedia today, the thing I wanted to bend your ear about, or rather bogart your eyeballs on, is this fistful of awesome videos.

FIRST OF ALL, A LITTLE BACKSTORY: I dragged Azealia in here while she was recording and because she was headed out of the country for a slew of European engagements, we were pressed for time. Basically, I made her film without hair and makeup. YUP, AND SHE WAS COOL ABOUT IT.

The only reason I'm throwing out the preamble is that you can tell by this The Hundreds cover (shot by Brooke Nipar and featured after the jump) and the leading photo by Matt Barnes, your girl can run the gamut between girl-next-door easy-breezy and
VAMP. BOOM.

Willow Smith Wig

Willow Smith in a pink and blonde wig.
Photo: Courtesy of Willow Smith's WhoSay page

Willow Smith stepped out in a giant pink-tipped perm wig while shopping at Louis Vuitton on Friday, and it IMMEDIATELY reminded us of another serial high-hair wearer—Ms. Nicki Minaj! As it turns out, the Marie Antoinette-inspired wig was actually from Barbz herself. Willow tweeted to her "Fireball" video costar "Thank you @nikkiminaj you're amazing!!!" with a picture of her sporting the new 'do. Nicki replied "Ha!!! WORK willowcita!!!!! You're more than welcome!!!! @OfficialWillow BOOM!" showcasing the ENTIRE ensemble (plus hair!) in a full-body pic. Cue our minds exploding. The 18th century wig paired with a preppy mixed-prints ensemble and metallic puffy coat looks like if Marie Antoinette went on a shopping spree at Madewell and then IMMEDIATELY after decided to explore the galaxy in her custom-made spacesuit and decked-out space shuttle. Amazing.
